Baseball Poem ---

After the Game

From the book

That Sweet Diamond

by Paul B. Janeczko, Carole Katchen (Illustrator)

Bases yanked.

Infield groomed.

Tarp pulled

to the edge of the outfield grass,

smoothed.

Lowered flags folded.

Hisst, hisst, hisst of brooms

sweeping aisles and ramps.

Section by section,

the lights go out

until the field is dark,

and the ghosts of players

gone

to other lives

long

for another game

on that sweet diamond.
