GE Capital Solutions targets MD truck market
NEW YORK -- GE Capital Solutions' transportation finance unit has launched a full range of financial solutions, from leases and loans to wholesale floor plan financing, for the medium-duty truck sector (Classes 4-7), specifically targeting operators and dealers of small- and medium-fleet sizes. GE is working closely with truck manufacturers and dealer networks to provide best-in-class service and technology, enabling them to sell more products to customers. This company aims to become the premier provider of medium-duty truck financing by 2010.
Dan Clark, general manager of GE Capital Solutions, Transportation Finance, said, "Technology can be a real differentiator for dealerships and we have built an auto-approval system to enable medium-duty truck dealers to receive credit approval in minutes -- helping them give their customers top service. Already, 50 percent of all the deals we're seeing in the market are approved via the auto-decisioning technology."
With more than 120,000 trucking assets already managed in the light- and heavy-duty truck sectors, GE Capital Solutions aims to be the largest independent provider in the medium-duty space.

They're back! IRS resurrects random audits
The Internal Revenue Service has announced plans to return to its practice of selecting random tax returns for audits this fall. Beginning in October, the Service will target approximately 50,000 income tax returns from 2006.
The random audit process had been discontinued five years ago when the IRS began its mission to be recognized as a kinder, gentler agency. Traditionally, a random audit is a full-blown audit where the chosen taxpayer is subjected to an examination of every item on the tax return and must provide justification for each item. In this go-round, the IRS has indicated that many of the randomly audited taxpayers will not face the rigorous line-by-line audit. It is expected that approximately 8,000 returns will be examined by the IRS and will require no action on the part of the taxpayer. Approximately 9,000 taxpayers will be able to respond to audit inquiries by mail. The remaining 30,000 or so taxpayers will be required to face their inquisitors and explain information on their tax returns, however the IRS has indicated that substantiation for every single number on the return might not be required. The taxpayers selected for random audits are not suspected scofflaws. The tax returns are selected completely randomly and the audits are used to gather information about taxpayer norms. [headlines]

Sales Make it Happen
by Steve Chriest
The New Sales Professional
Most companies expect their sales teams to identify prospects, provide product or service information, and persuade buyers to purchase. So, why pay to staff a marketing department? Isn't it the marketing department's job to identify bona fide prospects, build interest in the company's products or services, and generate sales?
The primary task of marketing in any organization is to know the customer so intimately that when she is exposed to the company's product or service, she immediately sees that it fits what she wants, and is willing to explore a purchase. If the marketing department, in the business-to-business sales world, does its job and fills a company's sales funnel with prospects and customers who are ready to buy, the role of the salesperson will change. No longer responsible for demand creation, the salesperson's role will evolve from persuader to facilitator, and with that evolution will come increased responsibilities and accountabilities.
Instead of selling, in the traditional sense, the new sales professional will manage expanded activities as an agent for both the company and the customer. These expanded activities will include interfacing with internal departments that impact the customer's purchasing experience, negotiating agreements that benefit all parties, and listening for opportunities to tailor products and services to customers' current and future needs. As the customer's agent, consultant, advisor and voice, the salesperson will work with the company and help figure out how to create and deliver what satisfies customers and keeps them loyal for as long as possible.
The expanded role of professional salespeople will make them increasingly more important in the company's revenue generation process. As the role of the salesperson evolves from persuader to facilitator, everyone benefits. The company is able to provide products and services that satisfy customer wants and needs, the customer gets what she wants when she wants it, and the sales professional enjoys enhanced status in the eyes of the customer and the company.
It's a great time to be a professional salesperson. If you remain in the game, you'll have an opportunity, soon, to grow your skills to levels you might not have previously imagined. Those skills will be valued by employers even more tomorrow than they are today, and one day you will be recognized, evaluated and compensated for your ability to drive customer satisfaction and retention.

Podium Partners Equipment Lease Broker
Training & Support Program Launched Company Will Train New Lease Brokers and Improve Existing Brokers
Costa Mesa, CA –Alister McNeill, president of Podium Financial Group, Inc., a Costa Mesa based equipment finance and leasing company specializing in funding or syndicating “slightly less than bankable” transactions for lease brokers, and Ken Goodman, CLP, managing partner of Goodman & Associates, Lake Forest, CA, a consulting and training company for equipment leasing professionals, announced the formation of Podium Partners.
Podium Partners, which will operate as a division of Podium Financial Group, Inc., is a joint venture project between Podium and Goodman to train people to become successful equipment finance professionals and to enhance the operations of active lease brokers through streamlining their administrative functions and providing them access to new financing programs.
Business Opportunities
Podium Partners will primarily provide its services to people looking for business opportunities. Some of these are already in the financial services business such as mortgage sales people or brokers, insurance agents and stockbrokers, and they are either looking to expand their product offerings or redirect their careers entirely. Other prospects include sales executives from all industries, corporate executives searching for entrepreneurial opportunities after years with large companies; in fact anyone looking to improve their future.
The Podium Partners training program is based on the highly successful “Complete Lease Broker Training Course” that Goodman has been conducting for the last two years for such people; but Podium will add a transaction and marketing support element not previously available.
Existing Brokers Benefit Too
The typical small lease broker is a sales guy, not an operations person, no matter how extensive his technical training might be, he often does not have the time to devote to both selling and administrative functions. In the end, sales related activities grow the business, not the operational tasks.
The challenge is that the support functions that are required to get deals signed and funded often compete with sales activities such as prospecting and making sales calls. Brokers have been known to spend hours or days on credit packaging, documentation issues, presenting to multiple funding sources and following up with customers, vendors, insurance agents and such to get everything needed to fund a single complicated deal.
Podium Partners allows the broker to “outsource” his entire operations department and instead focus on finding more business. In fact, he can literally send in an application and do nothing else until it’s time to cash his commission check; Podium will handle all the paper work in between. Of course, most brokers want to be involved with some of the customer contact and vendor relations, which is fine. In those instances, Podium will simply perform the administrative tasks that the broker doesn’t want to handle.
For its operational work, Podium collects a small monthly fee (which is refundable if volume targets are met) and a portion of the profits on each transaction.
Marketing Assistance – The Big Plus
“A unique benefit of the Podium Partners program is that Ken comes with it,” said McNeill. “He will be there to help our Associates with their strategic and tactical marketing ideas. Since he successfully ran marketing for three companies which made the “Inc. 500,” that’s a big plus.”
“We will also assign a dedicated manager to each Associate so they have a consistent point of contact in the Podium organization,” he continued.
According to Goodman, “Podium Partners will be special because it combines top level education, full spectrum funding (“A” through “D-“ credit customers) and processing and access to top professional sales and marketing people to help strategize and close those deals.”
“Don’t forget,” he adds. “Podium has been in the broker support business for almost twenty years so their role here is merely an extension of what they have already been doing.”
Years of Experience
Podium Partners is the result of years of combined effort by two of the top professionals in the equipment leasing industry today.
Ken Goodman, CLP of Goodman & Associates Lease Consultants is a leading marketer; trainer and consultant to equipment leasing companies with over 35 years of industry experience. Ken, who was one of the first Certified Lease Professionals (“CLP”) in the country, has helped grow several successful companies, and consulted for many others. In addition, Goodman & Associates has been conducting its “Complete Lease Broker Training Program” classes for the last two years.
Alister McNeill, president of Podium Financial Group, Inc. has been analyzing, structuring and funding equipment finance deals since 1990. He originally formed Podium Financial to service lease brokers who did not have the time or the expertise to work difficult credit or “structured” transactions on their own but has now expanded it to the full service lease funding entity it is today.
Podium Partners was conceived to provide the best of both worlds for people who want to own their own businesses in the growing financial services industry but who may not yet be comfortable enough to go it alone or who recognize the value of a support structure and seek to utilize the expertise of a successful lease broker operation.

Calendar Events This Day
Bowdler's Day - A day to remember the prudish medical doctor. Thomas Bowdler, born near Bath, England, on July 11, 1754. He gave up the practice of medicine and undertook the cleansing of the works of Shakespeare by removing all the words and expressions he considered to be indecent or impious. His Family Shakespeare, in 10 volumes, omitted all those words "which cannot with propriety be read aloud in a family." He also "Purified" Edward Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and selections from the Old Testament. His name became synonymous with self-righteous expurgation, and the word bowdlerize had become part of the English language. Bowdler died at Rhyddings, in South Wales, Feb 24, 1825.
Day of the Five Million: 20th Anniversary - In 1987 an eight-pound baby boy, Matej Gaspar, born at 1:35 AM, EST, at Zagreb , Yugoslavia, was proclaimed the five billionth inhabitant of the Earth. The United Nations Found for Population Activities, hoping to draw attention to population growth, proclaimed July 11 as "Day of the Five Million," noting that 150 babies are born each minute.
United Nations: World Population Day - In June 1989 the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that July 11 be observed by the international community as World Population Day. An outgrowth of the Day of the Five Billion (July 11, 1987), the Day seeks to focus public attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, particularly in the context of overall development plans and programs and the need to create solutions to these problems

This Day in American History
1656- Ann Austin and Mary Fisher, two Englishwomen, become the first Quakers to enter the American colonies when the ship carrying them lands at Boston in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The pair had come from Barbados, where Quakers had established a center for missionary work. The Religious Society of Friends, whose members are commonly known as Quakers, was a Christian movement founded by George Fox in England during the early 1650s. Quakers opposed central church authority, preferring to seek spiritual insight and consensus through egalitarian Quaker meetings. They also advocated sexual equality, and became some of the most outspoken opponents of slavery in early America. Shortly after arriving to Massachusetts, Austin and Fisher, whose liberal teachings enraged the Puritan colonial government, were arrested and jailed. After five years in prison, they were deported back to Barbados. In October of 1656, the Massachusetts colonial government enacted their first ban on Quakers, and on 20 October 1658, ordered Quakers banished from the colony "under penalty of death." On 27 October 1659, William Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson became the first Quakers to be executed in America when they were hanged from an elm tree on Boston Common. Mary Dyer was sentenced with them but reprieved and warned not to return to Boston. She did, and was hanged on 01 June 1860. In the mid-eighteenth century, John Woolman, an anti-slavery Quaker, traveled the American colonies, preaching and advancing the abolitionist cause. He also organized boycotts of products made by slave labor, and was responsible for convincing many Quaker communities to publicly denounce slavery. Another of many important abolitionist Quakers was Lucretia Mott, who worked on the Underground Railroad in the nineteenth century, helping lead fugitive slaves to freedom in the Northern states and Canada. In addition to her anti-slavery crusade, Mott later became a leader in the movement for women's rights

1804- Alexander Hamilton was fatally wounded in a pistol duel with Aaron Burr. Hamilton had fought Burr’s run for the presidency in 1800, and for the governorship of New York in 1804, when Hamilton and others suspected that Burr intended to attach New York to the disgruntled New England states in a plan to disunite from the Union and form a northern confederacy. Jefferson and Burr had equal electoral votes, throwing the election to the House where each state would have one vote. There were 35 ballots in a row, deadlocked, until the 36th, and Burr became vice-president (they were separate election for the office at that time). Burr challenged Hamilton, who deliberately misfired before Burr fired with the intent to kill. Burr was later tried for treason in an attempt to have Southern states secede from the union and join Mexico.

1864-General Jubal A. Early, commanding Confederate troops attempting to draw Union forces away from Richmond, broke through inadequate Union forces southeast of Frederick, MD., and entered the District of Columbia. His goal was to attack the White House, as was General Lee’s original goal when his troops were caught at Gettysburg. At this time, the Union was aware of the original thrust by Lee and his forces and had been re-enforcing the capital. Noting that hastily ordered federal reserves were arriving in significant numbers, Early withdrew the next night. He continued to harass Union forces from Shenandoah Valley until the Battle of Cedar Creek in October. He was elevated by Lee to Lt. General. He was very loyal to Lee and an ardent critic of General Longstreet.

1870- Snowden School of Alexandria, VA, was the first African-American School established by a state. The Snowden and Hallowell schools were the first black public schools in the City of Alexandria. In 1915, the Snowden School for Boys was destroyed in a fire, but the students were allowed to attend St. Mary’s Catholic Church School which was located at the time on Wolfe and Royal Streets. In 1920, the Snowden and Hallowell schools were consolidated, and the resulting school was named the Parker-Gray School. Parker-Gray School is named for John Parker, principal of the Snowden School for Boys, and Sarah Gray, principal of the Hallowell School for Girls.

1914 -Babe Ruth made his debut in major league baseball when he took the mound in Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox against the Cleveland Indians. Ruth was relieved for the last two innings, but was the winning pitcher in a 4-3 game. During his rookie season, Ruth made $2,900. Six years later Ruth would pocket a $125,000 paycheck as a member of the New York Yankees.
1916-US President Woodrow Wilson signs the Federal Aid Road Act, the first grant-in-aid enacted by Congress to help states build roads. In 1916, roads throughout America were generally poor and most were susceptible to weather. The advent of the Ford Model T brought on new interests in higher standards for roads, and by the early 1900s, motorist clubs like the American Automobile Association (AAA) had rallied around the call for federally funded long-distance highways. Farmers balked at the idea, arguing that paying taxes so city people could go on car tours was unfair. As the car became more important to farmers, however, the ground became fertile for legislation to raise the quality or roads across the country.
1919-The first golfer to play 180 holes in one day was Edward Styles, who started the marathon contest at 5:53am at the Old York Road Country Club, Philadelphia, PA, played 180 hones, 10 rounds of golf, in 796 strokes, and finished playing at 8:32pm. 1944-*ENDL, GERALD L.—Medal of Honor
Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U S. Army, 32d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Anamo, New Guinea, 11 July 1944. Entered service at: Janesville, Wis. Birth: Ft. Atkinson, Wis. G.O. No.: 17, 13 March 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty near Anamo, New Guinea, on 11 July 1944. S/Sgt. Endl was at the head of the leading platoon of his company advancing along a jungle trail when enemy troops were encountered and a fire fight developed. The enemy attacked in force under heavy rifle, machinegun, and grenade fire. His platoon leader wounded, S/Sgt. Endl immediately assumed command and deployed his platoon on a firing line at the fork in the trail toward which the enemy attack was directed. The dense jungle terrain greatly restricted vision and movement, and he endeavored to penetrate down the trail toward an open clearing of Kunai grass. As he advanced, he detected the enemy, supported by at least 6 light and 2 heavy machineguns, attempting an enveloping movement around both flanks. His commanding officer sent a second platoon to move up on the left flank of the position, but the enemy closed in rapidly, placing our force in imminent danger of being isolated and annihilated. Twelve members of his platoon were wounded, 7 being cut off by the enemy. Realizing that if his platoon were forced farther back, these 7 men would be hopelessly trapped and at the mercy of a vicious enemy, he resolved to advance at all cost, knowing it meant almost certain death, in an effort to rescue his comrades. In the face of extremely heavy fire he went forward alone and for a period of approximately 10 minutes engaged the enemy in a heroic close-range fight, holding them off while his men crawled forward under cover to evacuate the wounded and to withdraw. Courageously refusing to abandon 4 more wounded men who were lying along the trail, 1 by 1 he brought them back to safety. As he was carrying the last man in his arms he was struck by a heavy burst of automatic fire and was killed. By his persistent and daring self-sacrifice and on behalf of his comrades, S/Sgt. Endl made possible the successful evacuation of all but 1 man, and enabled the 2 platoons to withdraw with their wounded and to reorganize with the rest of the company.

1962-The Telstar communications satellite picked up broadcast signals from France and bounced them down to an antenna in Maine on 11 July 1962, thus delivering the first live television picture from Europe to America. Telstar was launched from Cape Canaveral as an experiment in TV transmission, and was also used to send radio and telephone signals. Americans watched a seven-minute program, featuring a song by Yves Montand. Historians believe this

1985-- Coca-Cola returns as Classic Coke : the company unveiled plans to return the beloved version of Coca Cola--now christened "Classic Coke"--to the market. In the wake of this groundbreaking, company officials quietly conceded that they had erred in halting distribution of the "classic" version of the drink. However, they refused to admit that releasing New Coke was a mistake. Indeed, even though American consumers reviled it, the company kept New Coke in circulation, albeit in cans and bottles that identified the drink simply as "Coke.

Although the company had predicted just four months earlier that it would expand its retail efforts, the company decided its build-to-order strategy would be more profitable as a strictly mail-order operation. By 1998, the company had become the country's No. 3 seller of computers, after Compaq and IBM.
Today they are number 2, behind HP, and recently announced they will start selling computers at Wal-Mart.

Poem
Biographical Note
In the first game of a twi-night
double-header,
July 10, 1947,
recovering alcoholic
Donald P. Black
of the Cleveland Indians,
only moments before
I slid safely into
the world,
fired a final
belt-high heater
that rookie
Ferris Burrhead Fain
waved goodbye to for a no-hit,
no-run game,
rode the shoulders
of his team
into the dugout,
and disappeared
into the brightest bars
in the city forever.
