Dash in Norfolk, Virginia
The above picture was taken when my son Dash graduated the Great Lakes Naval Training School. I like it because it shows him with his arm around me. To you who still have a father alive, let me tell you that is the best Father's Day present you can give: put your arm around him and let him know how much you love and appreciate him.
Dash is going back to the waters of Kuwait in a special unit, something he volunteered for. Here is part of a message he sent from Norfolk, Virginia:
“I've got a lot of training ahead...definitely in the military here(lol)!
“...currently I'm in charge of my new boat unit ... #42 that's my crew #42. we are under Coastal Warfare , Squadron 4.. we are soo new no one knows anything about it.
“It is funny. My crew is made of 8 crackerjack sailors...die hard guys...
“We will be "Brown Water Sailors" after all our extensive training. I now wear the jungle green basic issue battle dress uniform similar to our Marines... actually it is the same uniform, just US NAVY insignia.”
TODAY
Chief Electrician,
Chief Petty Officer, now a Merchant Marine, Military Sealift Command
"Currently anchored out of Port Victoria, Mahe, Seychelles, a providence of Africa, an island owned by the French and ruled by the English. They speak Creole here."

Editorial: Confusion Regarding
California Lender’s License Law
By Christopher “Kit” Menkin, Editor/Publisher
There still seems to be confusion regarding California Lender's Law in dealing with banks.
Do readers really believe that California is crazy enough to pass a law requiring every time a licensed broker/lessor did business with a bank they had to get permission in writing first?
The Department of Business Oversight is so far behind just on applications and actions, and to investigate and respond to each request would be a nightmare! Are we so conditioned that we would believe such a nonsensical requirement? What’s the matter with us?!
I thought Leasing News Legal Editor (and practicing attorney representing primarily banks) Tom McCurnin was quite explicit, citing "Montgomery v. GCFS, Inc., 237 Cal. App. 4th 724 (2015), which held that a licensed lender was not required to restrict assignments to only licensed lenders, cleared this all up. This is a three judge Appellate decision, which would overrule any DBO “opinion.” It should also be noted these communications in question are not formal, signed DBO Official Opinion Letters. Even if they were, they would be overruled by the Appellate Court ruling.(1)
In addition, as Attorney Ken Greene has brought up, the requirement
is to list on the application and annual reports, and does not say in the
online instructions that specific permission needs to be obtained from the unlicensed entities, such as banks.
Leasing News has heard from many bankers across the United States with questions as they about this. Some say they were "confused". They want to be "legal and binding" about doing business with their California third party originators. Equipment Leasing and Finance Association and attorneys from the ELFA legal committee are sending out newsletters telling them otherwise that the licensee is required to get written permission from the DBO. What should they do?
- First, it only pertains to transactions in California.
- Seconds, state or federal banks (and credit unions) don't care if the lessor/broker is licensed as they are exempt from the law, as per the court case cited by Tom McCurnin.
- The Appellate Case overrules the DBO. The DBO is to follow the law.
Now that this has been said, let me give you my opinion from my experience as a writer, editor, broker, lessor, bank board of director of loan and executive committees. It should be required to do business with a bank the broker/lessor should be licensed. The bank should not be “exempt.”
Why? It would be smart to do business only with licensed brokers/lenders/lessors.
- One, they pass a criminal background check, are fingerprinted, investigated very well, and have to abide by the laws of no misrepresentation or giving out false information, or they will be guilty of the law, resulting in paying fines and losing their ability to do business in California. They are required to do an annual report as well as be bonded.
- Two, they submit tax returns, personal financial statements, and the government has sources of legal and banking information that many entities would love to have, including the applicant gets fingerprinted.
- Three, the DBO does not accept complaints about non-licensed broker/lessors from lessees, vendors, regarding deception,
lying, false advertising. They only accept complaints against
licensed brokers/lessors and can take action. I have handled many complaints in the Leasing News Complaint Bulletin Board which they could have resolved, but could not, because the broker/lessor was not licensed. Most of the complaints concern not returning deposits or advance payments for leases that never funded.
- Four, perhaps most importantly, usually, someone who fills out the CFL application, and goes through the process, is a professional, who wants to remain a professional as a company or sole proprietor, and abide by the laws.
I think being licensed would be paramount in doing business with a company or sole proprietor would be a step against being defrauded, not involved in a lawsuit, or finding out something was wrong with the transaction when the client defaulted.
You should want to do business with a professional, who as a proprietor or company will hopefully grow in their career and be around to handle any problems that may arise. Insist on doing business in California with a licensed lender!

Common Mistakes Financial Businesses Make
When It Comes To Marketing Online
FinTech #102 by Brittney Holcomb
The finance industry is definitely one area that tends to lack luster when it comes to running a digital marketing campaigns effectively. While there are thousands of successful financial marketing campaigns out there, the few that seem to struggle with generating results are generally only a few adjustments off from being successful themselves.
Not Having A Clearly Defined Goal Or Strategy
A lot of small financial businesses do not have the budget to hire a dedicated marketing team, which means they usually do all their marketing themselves. While there’s nothing wrong with doing all your company marketing yourself, you should make sure that you’re setting aside time to actually develop a plan of attack rather than posting a couple Facebook ads, tweets, and a blog post on a Sunday night when you can’t fall asleep. Without a written out strategy your marketing campaign will lack both organization and any real expectations you have for executing it. Setting a clearly defined goal is what helps you map out what marketing channels are the best to utilize to achieve the end result.
Not Having A User Focused Website Design
Usability is more important than some may think when it comes to marketing. You can have a great product and compelling message, but if a user lands on your site and does not know how or where to complete the intended action, than what’s the point of marketing at all?
Your website should have a clear and simple path from the moment a user lands on the homepage, researches your services, and then contacts you. Major website usability factors includes making sure your landing pages loads within 3 seconds or less, a clear concise message, a call to action, friendly URL structures, as well as header and footer navigations.
Not Tracking Results
The biggest mistake you can make is not tracking your campaign. You should have a version of web analytics installed on your website. A web analytics code will be able to define your consumer’s path from the minute they found, to how often they visited your website, what pages they visited on your website, to when they finally contacted you for business. Google offers it, as does Alexa, and many others. Do a search and decide which one you want to try out first.
If you don’t install web analytics, you will never know which parts are and are not working in your marketing campaigns. Which is turn, usually ends costing you a lot of unnecessary money and not achieving your intended goal.
These are all simple adjustments any small or large financial business can make in order to get their marketing campaign back on track. None of which involve spending more money, just require studying your audience more closely and organzing your plan of attack.

Why People Don't Like to Watch News Videos
24% of People Watched News Video Last Week
by Matt Rosoff, www.businessinsider
Online news organizations, including Business Insider, are racing to create videos, driven in large part by Facebook's push to show more video in people's news feeds. One Facebook exec even recently said that she thought Facebook would be "all video" in the next decade.
But the rush to declare online text dead is premature. A recent poll of 50,000 online users conducted by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that only 24% of people had watched any news videos online in the last week. This chart from Statista shows the reasons why people say they don't watch news videos online. The number one reason: reading is faster and more convenient.

Fernando's View
By Fernando F. Croce
New releases give audiences a gripping drama ("Dheepan") and a career-spanning documentary ("De Palma"), while singular animation ("Anomalisa"), a great director's swan song ("No Home Movie") and a whimsical classic ("Here Comes Mr. Jordan") come to DVD.
In Theaters:
Dheepan (Sundance Selects): French director Jacques Audiard ("A Prophet") scored the top prize at the Cannes Festival with this gritty and intense drama, set in a Parisian housing project. The plot follows Sivadhasan (Antonythasan Jesuthasan), a Sri Lankan ex-soldier who, following a stay at a refugee camp, decides to move to France. The road to a new life is a torturous one, however, and it includes accepting a new identity and family to secure asylum in the new land. Renamed Dheepan and accompanied by a wife named Yalini (Kalieaswari Srinivasan) and a daughter named Illayaal (Claudine Vinasithamby), he finds work as a caretaker. When new tensions arise, Sivadhasan's life takes a sharp turn to the violent, putting everything he's achieved in jeopardy. Mixing observational drama with elements from a revenge thriller, Audiard's film portrays a struggle between despair and hope. With subtitles.
De Palma (A24): From his beginnings as an underground upstart to his peak as a Hitchcockian engineer of gleeful suspense, veteran director Brian De Palma has amassed an amazingly rich and varied career. So he's fully deserving of the spotlight in this engaging documentary by Noah Baumbach ("Mistress America"), which spans several decades as the filmmaker looks back at every single one of his films. De Palma's early years as a political shake-up artist in "Greetings" and "Hi, Mom!" are covered, along with such breakout hits as "Carrie" and "Dressed to Kill," which put him on the 1970s map of young auteurs alongside Spielberg and Scorsese. Discussing his successes, failures and cult favorites, De Palma exudes honesty, wisdom and mischievous humor. Brimming with clips and anecdotes, this documentary is a first-rate look at a great director's life and art.
Netflix Tip: A vivacious actress as well as a fierce victims’ rights advocate, Theresa Saldana (1954-2016) was a gifted performer with few but memorable film appearances. So check out Netflix for her best films, which include "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" (1978), "Home Movies" (1979), and "Raging Bull" (1980). |
On DVD:
Anomalisa (Paramount): The Oscar-winning writer behind "Being John Malkovich" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," Charlie Kaufman chases his obsessive melancholia into another medium with this poignant, visually inventive spot-motion drama. Told entirely using puppets and models, the story charts the emotional ups and downs of a depressed author named Michael (voiced by David Thewlis), who finds himself spending the night at Cincinnati hotel and trying to reconnect with a former girlfriend. When that goes awry, Michael becomes smitten with a shy young woman named Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and love seems to bloom between the two bruised creatures. But what will the harsh morning bring? Co-directed with Duke Johnson, Kaufman's one-of-a-kind film is a daring, intimate and dreamlike exploration of human loneliness and yearning.
No Home Movie (Icarus Films): A characteristically personal and challenging document, Chantal Akerman's final picture is a moving account of her relationship with her aged mother Natalia. A Polish immigrant and concentration camp survivor, Natalia is lovingly captured by her daughter's camera in a procession of recorded conversations, sometimes in person and at others during Skype sessions. Always obsessed with impermanence and identity, Akerman is similarly fascinated with the mundane periods between encounters, when the emptiness of an apartment or a landscape seems to hum with melancholy meaning. The approach demands patience from viewers, but the rewards are many as the film provides a profoundly intimate eulogy that ultimately reveals as much about its maker as it does about its subject. With subtitles.
Here Comes Mr. Jordan (Criterion): Remembered by cinema historians for his suave performances in 1930s melodramas and for his tough turn in the war classic "They Were Expendable," Robert Montgomery got a chance to show his comedic talents in this enjoyably whimsical 1941 fantasy, directed by Alexander Hall. Montgomery stars as Joe Pendleton, a boxer who's on his way to a championship fight when suddenly his plane crashes. While in heaven, he realizes that there's been a mistake and he's not supposed to die for another fifty years, so celestial manager Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains) sends him back to earth in as a murdered playboy. In this new guise, he meets old friends, attempts to restart his career, and falls in love. Though twice remade with Warren Beatty and Chris Rock, the delightful original remains the one to see, thanks greatly to a cast that also includes Evelyn Keyes and Edward Everett Horton.

This Day in American History
1579- the expedition of Sir Francis Drake anchored in a harbor just north of present-day San Francisco Bay in California, during drake's celebrated circumnavigation of the globe. Drake named the land Nova Albion and claimed it for England . The members of the expedition spent a month repairing their ship. Then on July 26 Drake sailed from California , continuing north and then west across the Pacific Ocean . The precise spot that Drake and his men landed and stayed for a month is a controversy between historians and the actual spot bay is not known. All Drake's records were destroyed for political reasons and this event is also part of the controversy. ( Encyclopedia of American Facts, Gordon Carruth ). http://legends.dm.net/pirates/drake.html

1775-Suffolk County, MA, celebrates a county holiday to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill. According to the same source quoted above, the Battle of Bunker Hill was actually fought on Breed's Hill . British forces under General Howe assaulted the Continental position three times before the Americans, under Col. William Prescott, ran out of gunpowder and were forced to retreat. The British then occupied Bunker Hill after another skirmish. For this reason, it is referred to as the Battle of Bunker Hill in history books. Today when you visit Boston , and the guide takes you to Bunker Hill, it is really Breed's Hill , as historians decided to change the name rather than explain the story.

1837- Strong Vincent is born in Waterford , Pennsylvania . After working as a lawyer, he went on to become a hero at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was mortally wounded defending Little Round Top. When hostilities erupted in April 1861, Vincent left the law to become an officer in the Erie Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. By early 1862, he rose to commander of the 83rd Pennsylvania . Vincent served in several campaigns with the Army of the Potomac, fighting at Yorktown, Fredericksburg , and Chancellorsville . He was promoted to colonel after Yorktown, and prior to Gettysburg , Vincent was given command of the Third Brigade, First Division, of the Fifth Corps. On the night of July 1, 1863, Vincent and his men were hurrying toward the battlefield under a bright moon. When the soldiers passed through a small town near Gettysburg , the regiment bands began to play and residents came to their doors to cheer the Yankee troops. Vincent remarked to an aide that there could be a worse fate than to die fighting in his home state with the flag overhead. The next day, as Vincent and his brigade were arriving behind the Union lines, General Governor K. Warren frantically summoned Vincent's force to the top of Little Round Top, a rocky hill at the end of the Federal line. Warren observed that the Confederates could turn the Union left flank by taking the summit, which was occupied by only a Yankee signal corps at the time. So Vincent and his men hurried up the hill, arriving just ahead of the Rebels. The brigade held the top, but just barely. Vincent was mortally wounded in the engagement and died on July 7. He was promoted posthumously to brigadier general. http://members.aol.com/CWSurgeon0/indexV.html

1972-Five are arrested for the break-in at Democratic Party Headquarters ( in Watergate complex, Washington , DC ). They had previously placed wire taps and searched the headquarters on a regular basis, but leaving a rear-door unlocked made a building security guard suspicious. The arrests led to revelations of political espionage, threats of imminent impeachment of the president, and, on August 9,1974, the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon. It is doubly ironic that Nixon was way ahead in the poll primarily because his opponent Senator George McGovern of South Dakota was not strongly supported by the Democratic Party, although he had sworn he would end the Viet Nam War 90 days after he was elected.
