iPhone 5s Fastest Processor among Digital Devices
by Christopher Menkin

First, I declare I use a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD, as I wanted a large screen, as well as I like the 32 hour battery life (great advantage for my use and/or forgetting to re-charge the device). Everybody else in the household is an Apple user with iPhones, Ipads, Macbook laptop, etc. I am saluting the new achievements.

All the attention by consumer media seems to focus on the fingerprint
unlock app, which is part of the operating system and available
in an up-grade to iOS 7 and download of the fingerprint app.(There
may be older models in use who are unable to up-grade to iOS 7.). Users report “the scanner was able to pick up all of our fingers in fractions of a second and from any angle. It's so natural, in fact, that we almost forgot that passwords and unlock screens even existed on the 5s.”

SunSpider test against four different benchmarks, and in each case the 5S was the clear winner:

Apple iSO7 Fingerprint Fits Most Apple iPhone/iPad
Coalition Promotes Fingerprint Application

Gascón & Schneiderman: After Months of Pressure, Apple Responds With The World's First Attempt To Implement A Technological Solution To The Global Smartphone Theft Epidemic

Eric T. Schneiderman
New York
Attorney General
George Gascón
San Francisco
District Attorney

San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón and New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman released this joint statement following today's deployment of Apple's newest operating system, iOS 7:

"After months of pressure from a global coalition of elected officials and law enforcement agencies, we are pleased that Apple is set to release a new mobile operating system that includes a theft deterrent feature called Activation Lock. This is an important first step towards ending the global epidemic of smartphone theft.

“In the months ahead, it is our hope that Activation Lock will prove to be an effective deterrent to theft, and that the widespread use of this new system will end the victimization of iPhone users, as thieves learn that the devices have no value on the secondary market. We are particularly pleased that – because Activation Lock is a feature associated with Apple's new operating system as opposed to a new device – it will be available to consumers with older phone models who download the free upgrade.

“While it is too early to tell if Activation Lock will be a comprehensive solution to the epidemic of ‘Apple Picking’ crimes that have victimized iPhone and iPad owners around the world, we believe it is a step forward and strongly urge iPhone users to download iOS 7, and most importantly, ensure they utilize both an Apple ID and Find My iPhone. We also encourage Apple to make Activation Lock a fully opt-out solution in order to guarantee widespread adoption, and strongly urge the other leading manufacturers of smartphones to quickly implement effective theft deterrents that protect their customers from violent crime.”

Gascón and Schneiderman also urge consumers to enable basic security features such as a password or the newly available fingerprint scanning technology on the iPhone 5S. While password and fingerprint scanning security features can help protect data on a device, they do not deter thieves from stealing smartphones. Theft deterrence for iPhone users will occur only with the adoption of iOS 7, and the utilization of an Apple ID and Find My iPhone app is widespread. Additionally, the success of Activation Lock is largely dependent on the failure of hackers' rumored exploits.

Finally, they noted that simply downloading iOS 7 and enabling Activation Lock through the use of an Apple ID and Find My iPhone does not mean consumers are safe from potential theft. Even if Activation Lock proves effective, thieves will not react overnight. Accordingly, it is vital that consumers be aware of their surroundings at all times, especially when using their smartphones in public places.

The Secure Our Smartphones (SOS) Initiative coalition is a groundbreaking coalition of state Attorneys General, major city Mayors, District Attorneys, major city Police Chiefs, state and city Comptrollers, public safety activists and consumer advocates from around the world. This initiative is working to encourage the industry to implement meaningful solutions that will end the national epidemic of violent thefts of mobile communications devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Fernando's View
By Fernando F. Croc

Warm comedy-drama ("Enough Said") and ripping sci-fi ("Riddick") come to theaters, while DVD releases provide nonstop action ("World War Z"), sly satire ("The Bling Ring") and an Oscar-winning director's final movie ("Behind the Candelabra").

In Theaters:

Enough Said (Fox Searchlight Pictures): The late James Gandolfini turns in a lovely final performance in this funny and poignant comedy-drama, directed by Nicole Holofcener. Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as Eva, a divorced woman whose work as a masseuse leads her to befriend famous poetess Marianne (Catherine Keener). She later also meets Albert (Gandolfini), a fellow single parent whose humor and down-to-earth charm beguile her. Soon, however, Eva discovers that Albert is Marianne's ex-husband, and her comments on his foibles start spreading doubts in her mind. Can she be happy with her newfound beau, or will petty feelings threaten their romance? With a light touch that's at home both with laughs and heart, Holofcener's film is a lovable and deeply human tale of unexpected emotional detours and new opportunities.

Riddick (Universal Pictures): Action star Vin Diesel returns to one of his breakthrough roles in this ripping sci-fi adventure. Diesel stars as the titular Riddick, a space adventurer last seen left for dead on a scorching desert planet. Learning to survive in the harsh new environment, he bides his time and fights bounty hunters while planning to take revenge on those who betrayed him. As interplanetary rivals like Santana (Jordi Molla) and Boss Johns (Matt Nable) draw closer to him, Riddick fights for his life and becomes as much of a predator as his enemies. Directed by robust genre specialist David Twohy, the film is a prime example of well-engineered tension, anchored by Diesel's commanding presence and filled with the kind of suspense and brutal humor often missing in today's action blockbusters.

Netflix Tip: Nicole Holofcener's new film "Enough Said" highlights her qualities as a writer-director of human comedy-dramas. So check out Netflix for her earlier successes, which include "Walking and Talking" (1996), "Lovely & Amazing" (2001), "Friends with Money" (2006) and "Please Give" (2010).

On DVD:

World War Z (Paramount): Brad Pitt teams up with director Marc Forster ("Monster’s Ball") for this highly-anticipated, action-packed blockbuster. Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, a retired United Nations operative who finds himself in a nightmare scenario when the world is suddenly in the grip of a surge of zombie creatures. As order crumbles in every corner of the planet, Gerry must protect his family as they make their way out of the dangerous zones, with the ghouls constantly snapping not far behind them. Though zombie movies have a long and distinguished tradition of gore, Forster instead opts for suspense over blood, serving up a global apocalypse that’s long on kinetic thrills rather than gruesome spills. The result is a rollicking, smart summer rollercoaster ride with equal elements of action and horror.

The Bling Ring (Lions Gate): Writer-director Sofia Coppola serves up a sly commentary on fame obsession with this intriguing drama, based on a true story. Set in the glitzy areas of Los Angeles, the story follows a trio of teenage girls, Rebecca (Katie Chang), Nicki (Emma Watson) and Laurie (Taissa Farmiga), as they take their fascination with celebrity one step further by breaking into the homes of Hollywood stars. Known as "the Bling Ring" for the girls' giddy fondness for expensive clothing and jewelry, they bring their friends along as they sneak into empty mansions and become front page news. Like Coppola's earlier portraits of alienated fame ("Lost in Translation," "Marie Antoinette"), the film is a visually lush, inventive and often humorous look at how people sometimes end up imprisoned by the sleek luxury they desire so much.

Behind the Candelabra (HBO): Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh ("Traffic") announced his plans to retire from filmmaking with this first-rate showbiz biopic, which showcases a pair of superb performances. Taking place in the mid-1970s and early 1980s, the story follows the relationship between notoriously flamboyant Las Vegas entertainer Liberace (Michael Douglas) and his younger lover Scott Thorson (Matt Damon). Scott moves into Liberace's wealthy circles, but their romance is plagued by many obstacles, from jealousy and insecurity to violence and AIDS. Douglas and Damon are splendid in this involving, intelligent, and ultimately heart-rending look at the emotional upheavals of a relationship, which is, despite having premiere on HBO, one of Soderbergh's most cinematic triumphs.

Baseball Poem

(We were there and Sue snapped a picture of Bonds just as his bat hit the ball. She took a entire set of pictures of the event. To mark the occasion, I wrote the poem below)

Barry Bonds Hits his 700 th Home Run

by Kit Menkin

He swaggered to the plate,
like Elvis Presley going on stage
Joe Louis entering the ring,
Taking care of business

The fans knew he would hit 700---
They stood as the Giants were leading
in the first inning
But the Pitcher hit Bonds in the chest

He shrugged it off,
like Elvis Presley going on stage,
Walking to first base,
Knowing he would score a run.

The field was more lit up than Las Vegas,
Bright, surreal, as if this was a movie set,
The players moving in slow motion
as the pitcher tried to take control.

The third inning the fans stood up again,
This time the ball came in for a strike,
as the pitcher had the guts with a fast ball,
It happened so fast.

Bonds swung in stride,
Moving in this baseball ballet,
Knowing the ball was his,
Taking care of business.

He ran the bases,
Went back to the dug out,
as the crowd went wild,
699 was changed to 700,
a new “legend” sign was revealed.

He did not come out again,
until the new inning
Walking to the right field,
next to the new “legend” banner.

He threw the ball several times
to the coach on the side line,
As the crowd continued to roar,
camera flash lights from the stadium.

He popped out the next time,
almost as if he swung too soon.
His run to first was fast than slow
as he watched the ball tell him no.

He came up to bat one more time,
Determined, seemingly angry,
Ready to make up for the last time,
It wasn't a swagger.

Don't treat me this way,
I'm going to hit it far,
Two strikes and he swung so hard,
if he had connected,
It would have gone to Treasure Island,
The swing had so much power,
You could feel it in the stands.

Afterwards he was happy,
His team won Four to One;
on Saturday he hit 701
Taking care of business.

1944--POPE, EVERETT PARKER Medal of Honor
Rank and organization: Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. Place and date: Peleliu Island, Palau group, 19-20 September 1944. Entered service at: Massachusetts. Born: 16 July 1919, Milton, Mass. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as commanding officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau group, on 19-20 September 1944. Subjected to pointblank cannon fire which caused heavy casualties and badly disorganized his company while assaulting a steep coral hill, Capt. Pope rallied his men and gallantly led them to the summit in the face of machinegun, mortar, and sniper fire. Forced by widespread hostile attack to deploy the remnants of his company thinly in order to hold the ground won, and with his machineguns out of order and insufficient water and ammunition, he remained on the exposed hill with 12 men and 1 wounded officer determined to hold through the night. Attacked continuously with grenades, machineguns, and rifles from 3 sides, he and his valiant men fiercely beat back or destroyed the enemy, resorting to hand-to-hand combat as the supply of ammunition dwindled, and still maintaining his lines with his 8 remaining riflemen when daylight brought more deadly fire and he was ordered to withdraw. His valiant leadership against devastating odds while protecting the units below from heavy Japanese attack reflects the highest credit upon Capt. Pope and the U.S. Naval Service.
1945 -- Rocket scientist Von Braun arrives in the U.S.A. under the auspices of "Operation Paperclip" — a program that was supposed to exclude Nazis, but in fact became a cover for "rehabilitating" them. His dossier was rewritten so he didn't appear to have been an ardent Nazi. See the NASA site for the sanitized Werner.

1950-COMMISKEY, HENRY A., SR. Medal of Honor
Rank and organization: First Lieutenant (then 2d Lt.), U.S. Marine Corps, Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein.). Place and date: Near Yongdungp'o, Korea, 20 September 1950. Entered service at: Hattiesburg, Miss. Birth: 10 January 1927, Hattiesburg, Miss. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a platoon leader in Company C, in action against enemy aggressor forces. Directed to attack hostile forces well dug in on Hill 85, 1st Lt. Commiskey, spearheaded the assault, charging up the steep slopes on the run. Coolly disregarding the heavy enemy machine gun and small arms fire, he plunged on well forward of the rest of his platoon and was the first man to reach the crest of the objective. Armed only with a pistol, he jumped into a hostile machine gun emplacement occupied by 5 enemy troops and quickly disposed of 4 of the soldiers with his automatic pistol. Grappling with the fifth, 1st Lt. Commiskey knocked him to the ground and held him until he could obtain a weapon from another member of his platoon and killed the last of the enemy gun crew. Continuing his bold assault, he moved to the next emplacement, killed 2 more of the enemy and then led his platoon toward the rear nose of the hill to rout the remainder of the hostile troops and destroy them as they fled from their positions. His valiant leadership and courageous fighting spirit served to inspire the men of his company to heroic endeavor in seizing the objective and reflect the highest credit upon 1st Lt. Commiskey and the U.S. Naval Service.
1950-MONEGAN, WALTER C., JR. Medal of Honor
Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, Company F, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein.). Place and date: Near Sosa-ri, Korea, 17 and 20 September 1950. Entered service at: Seattle, Wash. Born: 25 December 1930, Melrose, Mass. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a rocket gunner attached to Company F, and in action against enemy aggressor forces. Dug in on a hill overlooking the main Seoul highway when 6 enemy tanks threatened to break through the battalion position during a predawn attack on 17 September, Pfc. Monegan promptly moved forward with his bazooka, under heavy hostile automatic weapons fire and engaged the lead tank at a range of less than 50 yards. After scoring a direct hit and killing the sole surviving tank man with his carbine as he came through the escape hatch, he boldly fired 2 more rounds of ammunition at the oncoming tanks, disorganizing the attack and enabling our tank crews to continue blasting with their 90-mm guns. With his own and an adjacent company's position threatened by annihilation when an overwhelming enemy tank-infantry force bypassed the area and proceeded toward the battalion command post during the early morning of September 20, he seized his rocket launcher and, in total darkness, charged down the slope of the hill where the tanks had broken through. Quick to act when an illuminating shell lit the area, he scored a direct hit on one of the tanks as hostile rifle and automatic-weapons fire raked the area at close range. Again exposing himself, he fired another round to destroy a second tank and, as the rear tank turned to retreat, stood upright to fire and was fatally struck down by hostile machine gun fire when another illuminating shell silhouetted him against the sky. Pfc. Monegan's daring initiative, gallant fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty were contributing factors in the success of his company in repelling the enemy, and his self-sacrificing efforts throughout sustain and enhance the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

In 1972 it was reported that Young had been awarded $559,000 in a suit against NBC for syndicating reruns of the show without her permission. Young did not want them shown because her clothes and hairstyles in the shows were long out of date by the 70s.

I want a divorce." The band realizes they cannot go on without him, but agrees to delay the announcement until after the release of the Let It Be soundtrack -- an agreement Paul will break.
