Allied Health Care Services
June 1st has come and gone. Charles Schwartz and Allied have two court cases against them this date, no more. He had reportedly told creditors that he was applying for a $20 million bank line and would have by June 1st. He then told them there was a death in the family, so he had to take off for seven to ten days. Nothing else is new. Waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Over a year since President John Otto committed suicide. FBI seized some asset, leasing companies from Centerpoint, Heritage, and HL, among others, still being run out of his house in the desert. The leasing company is well and healthy, doing business, in control of the portfolio, performing extremely well as the case against Larasco and Secords is now basically on hold (“Stay” including Wells Fargo case) as both Larasco's and now Secords as individuals have filed bankruptcy. Excellent leasing staff. In the meantime, the FDIC told parent First Sound Bank to come up with new capitalized by May 28th or that is it! Today June 3rd. So far, no bites, Leasing News is told by insiders, and whether the FDIC closes them down this Friday at 5pm is not known. They need this problem like they need another hole in the head!

Sales makes it Happen
from Leasing News Archive
2001 Adrian Bulman Looks at our Industry
Adrian Bulman passed away at the age of 53 on January 13, 2001. He is survived by his wife Beth and (and at the time, these are the ages of his sons) Aaron (17) and Evan (14).
He was young, in the prime of his life, and perhaps one of the best liked “super brokers” of his time. Adrian was a contributor to Leasing News, writing articles and keeping us “abreast” of what was happening in the “field.”
His viewpoint back at the end of the start of this century remains profound, and definitely worth reading:
From our Archives, December 27, 2000:
A few weeks ago I asked what was happening in the market and got some interesting results. Here is some of the information I have come across from our leasing industry.
First, the small ticket leasing industry deals in perception. Our customer is the small business looking for equipment to do something better within his/her company probably replacing existing equipment. He is approved and has our contract in his hands. That evening he goes home and watches Peter Jennings while he is eating his dinner. He hears Coke has laid of an additional 2000 people. Housing starts are down. Consumer confidence is declining and the merchants are not expecting big Christmas sales. And last, Mr. Greenspan is cool to the idea or President elect Bush's tax cut and may or may not lower prime after the first of the year. All that negative news causes doubt and our lessee decides to wait. He says to himself, "I think I will wait 90 days before doing this and see what happens." For those of you who can remember it is '89 and '90 all over again.
2) For the first time I can remember we are competing with banks for small ticket deals. Local banks are hungry and desperate for revenue. Whether we like it or not they will also have more control over the customer than we do.
3) As 50 something lenders (today it is over 100) have gone away or "changed the way they do business" the survivors have raised rates and credit standards. This also has a direct impact on our competing with local banks. The "B" credit story deals are not getting done as they were a year ago. Many of those "B" credits have gotten shopped and have used credit cards to borrow and now can't be done.
4) Fraud! Don't kind yourself. As the economy cools the bad guys and girls find very innovative ways to steal from our industry. If something is just too good to be true then we all know it probably is. And, whether we like it or not, as the economy cools and there aren't as many deals out there some brokers and savvy vendors will polish beyond the realm of reality and in the words of Charles Randall, "Slide into complete male bovine excrement."
5) Inexperience. Many of the newer, younger brokers have gotten used to this terrific economy and have never gone through a downturn or watched their favorite lender disappear. Some fail to grasp the fact there was, possibly, too much money chasing deals and the ones receiving those huge dollars had to put that money on the street and fairly quickly. Historically, the quickest way to do that is to lower credit standards. But, when that happens those chicks come home to roost in about a year and a half. The younger brokers also need to realize the days of submitting a deal to three lenders with the first approval getting it are over. You do that now and you are probably going to end up with three turn downs and three very unhappy lenders. Lenders do talk with each other!!!!!
6) Transportation industry. Oh dear, if you are in this industry then fasten you seat belt because you are in for a rough ride. The big truck industry is hurting. Freightliner may not survive. They are rumored to be taking back 600 trucks per month. Small truckers are not making much money and first quarter of 01 they have five major expenses coming up -tags; highway use tax; ad valorem tax; Income tax; and down payment on their insurance premiums. An old friend and ex-Associates Commercial employee says there will be 80,000 additional large truck repos by 4/30/01. Most of us know Associates has raised their credit standards on trucks and almost no one will do owner operators. The truck dealers are desperate to place paper and have lost some of their arrogance. However, they are smart enough not to recourse any lease paper. Truck orders are way off. One of the biggest concerns is Freightliner owns a company that makes truck engines. I hear the very best truck engines. If Freightliner goes under and this engine manufacturer goes too it will cause huge problems for trucking.
Okay, so what is going to happen in 01? Who the heck knows??? However, the major lenders in small ticket should continue to do well. They will continue to cherry pick credits and even if we see a slight prime decrease I don't think it will be passed along. Collections will probably go up slightly.
The broker end could be a problem. I calculate over 100 brokers have closed up since September (The National Association of Equipment Leasing Brokers once having 1,089 members, the group at the end of March, 2010, is down to 670 members). More are going away after the first of the year. I think the first quarter of 01 is going to be a tough market for brokers. Their vendors are being solicited by some of the largest financial institutions in the US and now they are forced to compete directly with their lessee's bank. Even "B" story credits are difficult to get done. The broker survivors will be leaner and meaner. We all know there is business out there and we are a resourceful lot in finding it. Many brokers are focusing on specific industries. Others figure "twice the calls for half the volume" and I think everyone's profits have dropped this year. As a whole I think the brokers are frightened. Most are not doing this work between job openings. They are making house payments, buying groceries, and putting their kids through college. The changes in the last year are scary. There has not been a great deal of positive news from the leasing industry in 2000. Many I hear from are thinking more of controlling their own money and for the first time I hear some of the guys with a little more white hair than me talk about getting out.
On the whole, most people think 01 will be more of 00 with fewer lenders, tighter credit and more competition. In the many years I have been in this industry there has always been a 500 pound gorilla. No more! Denrich is long gone. Colonial is now owned by GECC. Manifest has been sold twice. Dwight and Charles have announced Republic is for sale and we hear Advanta is on the market. Being the eternal optimist, there certainly is lots of room for new lenders to emerge and become a "player" quickly.
But, as ole Mark Speros is fond of saying, "If it was easy everyone would be doing it!"

Affiliated Investment Group, Inc. is the proud continuation of over 20 years of serving the broker community. We are a balance sheet, cash flow, credit lender. The primary question on every transaction is "what is the likelihood of being paid back". Our motto is "any equipment, for any Lessee, anywhere in the country". Also known as "The Flexible Funding Source" as we look at a deal with the philosophy of "what's right" about it "how can we make it work". We have significant sources of funds from A to B credits.
Broker Qualify - Yes
ABCO Leasing, Inc. in Seattle area has been operating since 1974 serving the broker community. We required full financial disclosure on every transaction. We do story transactions, but do not like to refer to them as "C" credits. We think of them as "A" type credits that have not been discovered yet. Broker Qualify contact: Brad Christensen, Broker Relations Manager,971/204-0236 bradc@abcoleasing.net
* Allegiant Partners has expanded their maximum transaction size from $250,000 to $500,000 for the 5 western states of California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Arizona.

Bankers Capital " We will do ANY Type of Equipment, in ANY industry, in ANY state. We especially like 6-figure transactions with full financial packages no matter how good or bad they look. We look to structure the story C&D credits with any kind of additional collateral that makes sense. It could be with 2nd or 3rd mortgages on residential or commercial Real Estate, additional equipment, cash value life insurance, security deposits, vendor agreements. We look for any way to make the deal work instead of looking for any way to decline the deal." Broker Qualify - Please contact Larry LaChance

Calfund, LLC finances 18 wheelers and some trailers for owner operators with substandard credit.
Cobra Capital, LLC. Comments: Our registered trademark "Making impossible possible" is our central marketing tagline for both strong and weak credits. I have developed a 10 year history, (from Cobra and my prior company GALCO), with specialty, non-conforming transactions (story credits) and have a solid reputation for candidly responding to our originators and lessees and working diligently to mitigate deal risk rather than making excuses to turn deals down. Our originators prefer our underwriting approach to non-conforming transactions since unlike most non-conforming funders, we prefer to mitigate risk versus jacking our return. Both Originators and Lessee's prefer our candid approach as we are also frequently asked to advise lessee's and lessors on the best way to structure their bank loans and raise capital due to our 25+ year banking and accounting backgrounds as my partner and I are both former bankers and CPA's.
Dolsen Leasing has served the 11 Western States since 1958 and specializes in B & C Credits for established and new companies. We require a full financial package and offer both leases and financing for new and used equipment in the range of $10,000.00 to $250,000.00. Specialties include titled vehicles for both existing and new owner operators. Story credits are considered as long as credit has been reestablished and trends are positive. Credit decisions are based on old fashioned common sense, not credit scores, allowing us a very quick turnaround-often the same day. We accept broker business and also have in house salesmen. Broker Qualify - Please call or visit www.dolsenleasing.com
Dumac Leasing--Our prime prospect, has integrity, the ability to submit one to five leases for consideration per month, good financial analysis skills, good packaging abilities and can appreciate a funding source that looks at one deal at a time. Poor rating at BBB is a major hurdle. We are an A Credit lender and cash flow is critical. We use tax returns for info to compute cash flow.
Financial Pacific Leasing supports a nationwide network of Brokers and Lessors. We specialize in "B" and "C" credits for established companies as well as companies under two years in business. Broker Qualify - Please Call or see "Prospective Broker" section on website

Top 50 US banks and thrifts by assets
By Adrian Goffinet
Bank of America Corp. remained the largest bank in the United States at the end of 2010's first quarter, followed by JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup Inc.
The only change in the top 10 banks and thrifts was SunTrust Banks Inc. and Capital One Financial Corp. swapping spots, with SunTrust moving to No. 10 and Capital One moving to No. 9. American Express Co. had been included in the top 50 banks and thrifts list previously, but was excluded this quarter due to its deposits-to-assets ratio falling below the 25% threshold. First Citizens BancShares Inc. was the sole newcomer to the list, coming in at No. 44. Also noteworthy was OneWest Bank FSB, which jumped up four spots, resulting in a nine spot jump over the last 2 quarters. Both of these moves were propelled largely by government assisted deals, in which First Citizens acquired approximately $2.5 billion in assets, and OneWest acquired approximately $3.6 billion.
According to SNL Financial data, 33 of the top 50 banks and thrifts posted positive net income figures for the first quarter of 2010.

Fernando's View
By Fernando F. Croce
Laughs (“Get Him to the Greek”) and thrills (“Splice”) await theatergoers this weekend, while DVD releases include box-office hits (“Shutter Island,” “From Paris with Love”) and international beauties (“Close-Up”).
Get Him to the Greek (Universal Pictures): The lovelorn protagonist from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” may not return, but one of that comedy hit’s favorite supporting characters does in this rollicking semi-sequel. A hilarious second banana in the earlier movie, ridiculously vain rock singer Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) takes center stage here as the movie follows his eventful tour from London to Los Angeles. Along for the ride is long-suffering records lackey Aaron Green (Jonah Hill), who’s given the unenviable task of keeping an eye on the mischievous performer. Thriving more on the inspired interplay of the two talented stars than on any sort of plot, director Nicholas Stoller keeps this very funny comedy rocking with unexpected jokes and sharp supporting turns.
Splice (Warner Bros. Pictures): Good horror movies or science-fiction movies these days are a rare find, which makes Vincenzo Natali’s thriller, a smart and creepy combination of both genres, an especially welcome treat. The ingenious plot tells the story of Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley), young scientists famous for their experiments. Ignoring warnings about the limits of their powers, they come up with their most ambitious venture yet: Creating a new form of life by mixing different forms of human and animal DNA. But will this new organism, named “Den,” follow on their footsteps or rebel against its makers? An astute update of the old Frankenstein legend, the movie may be the most enjoyable mix of volatile thrills, thoughtful ideas and dark humor since Jeff Goldblum sprouted wings in “The Fly.”
Netflix tip: In honor of the late, great Dennis Hopper (1936-2010), hit Netflix for a mini festival of indelible performances from the legendary actor and wild man. There’s his iconic rebellious biker in “Easy Rider” (1969) and his brilliantly disturbing psycho in “Blue Velvet” (1986), but don’t miss Hopper’s warm, understated performances in “True Romance” (1993), “Carried Away” (1996) and “Jesus’ Son” (1999).
New on DVD:
Shutter Island(Paramount Pictures): You know you’re in for a wild, passionate time when you step into a movie by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese (“Taxi Driver,” “The Departed”). His new movie, a powerful thriller set in the 1950, is no exception. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Teddy Daniels, a U.S. marshal who, along with his partner (Michael Ruffalo), gets tangled in a murky investigation in an insane asylum located in an isolated Massachusetts island. As patients disappear in the fog and doctors reveal increasingly creepy sides, will the heroes uncover the truth or become just another lost soul in the maze of insanity? Mixing suspense with keen cinematic sophistication, it’s a nail-biting ride full of surprises and solid performances from a cast that also includes Michelle Williams, Ben Kingsley and Max von Sydow.
From Paris with Love (Lionsgate): Pierre Morel and Luc Besson, the duo responsible for the kinetic hit “Taken,” return for more thrills. Mixing humor and nonstop action, they follow the odd-couple pairing of two CIA agents stationed in Paris. James Reece (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is the aid to the U.S. Ambassador in France, whose desire for more excitement in his life is answered when he’s paired up with Charlie Wax (an inspired turn by John Travolta), a hair-trigger loose cannon who takes him on a frantic tour of the city’s criminal underworld. Barely allowing audiences even a minute to catch their breath after last week’s “Edge of Darkness,” this thriller should help pump some energy into the February’s usually ho-hum theater screens.
Close-Up (Criterion): One of the world’s most acclaimed modern filmmakers, Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami is treasured for a series of deeply humanistic and stylistically inventive works. Both qualities are in ample display in this 1990 masterpiece, which uses as its jumping-off point a story so absurd that it could only come from real life. In the city of Tehran, a man named Ali Sabzian infiltrates an affluent family’s household by posing as a famous director and pretending to be making a movie. His ruse is discovered and he’s tried for identity theft, but that’s just the beginning of the tale. Kiarostami got the real-life people to play themselves in this vivid, often funny and ultimately moving blend of documentary and fiction, which grows more layered and fascinating with each new viewing.

1781-Jack Jouett made a heroic 45-mile ride on horseback during the night of June 3-4, to warn Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson and the legislature that the British were coming. Jouett rode from a tavern in Louisa County to Charlottesville, VA, in about 6 ½ hours, arriving at Jefferson's home at dawn on June 4. Lieutenant Colonel Tarleton's British forces raided Charlottesville, but Jouett's warning gave the Americans time to escape. Jouett was born at Albermarle County, VA, December 7, 1754 and died at Bay, JY, in 1822 ( exact date not known ).

1800 - John Adams, the second president of the United States, becomes the first president to reside in Washington, D.C., when he takes up residence at Union Tavern in Georgetown. The city of Washington was created to replace Philadelphia as the nation's capital because of its geographical position in the center of the existing new republic. The states of Maryland and Virginia ceded land around the Potomac River to form the District of Columbia, and work began on Washington in 1791. French architect Charles L'Enfant designed the city's radical layout, full of dozens of circles, crisscross avenues, and plentiful parks.
1808-birthday of Jefferson Davis, American statesman, US Senator, only president of the Confederate States of America. Imprisoned May 10, 1865-May 13, 1867, but never brought to trial, deprived of rights of citizenship after the Civil War. Davis was born at Todd County, KY, and died at New Orleans, LA, Dec. 6,1889. His citizenship was restored, posthumously, October 17,1978, when President Carter signed an Amnesty Bill. This bill, he said, “ officially completes the long process of reconciliation that has reunited our people following the tragic conflict between the states. “ Davis's birthday anniversary is observed in Florida, Kentucky, and South Carolina on this day, in Alabama on the first Monday in June and in Mississippi on the last Monday in May. Davis's birth anniversary is observed as Confederate Memorial Day in Tennessee.

1860 -The Great Camanche Tornado began its deadly trek near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and ended its journey over Lake Michigan. 175 people lost their lives and 329 were injured. The town of Camanche, Iowa, on the Mississippi River, was destroyed. Total damage was 945,000 dollars (note - 1860 dollars).

1863 - Gen. Lee, with 75,000 Confederates, launched a second invasion of the North. Lee led his troops into Maryland and then Pennsylvania, to meet the Army of the Potomac again, this time around a small town called Gettysburg.
1864-Battle of Cold Harbor. Although Confederate General Robert E. Lee had placed his troops behind considerable breastworks, Union General Ulysses S. Grant launched an all-out attack on the Southern army. More than 7,000 Federal troops were killed within on-half hour of the battle on the first attack. General Lee won his last victory over Union forces, numbering 108,000 against this 59,000. 1500 Confederate troops were also killed. In an eight –minute period more men fell in an assault on entrenched Confederate troops than in any other like period of time. After a second unsuccessful attack, Grant's orders for a third assault were all but ignored. Grant had new and ill trained troops, and his battle plan was not carried out by his officers. Compounding this was the battlefield tradition held that the first commander who sought a truce in order to tend to the wounded was the loser. Grant refused to admit defeat by seeking such a truce and the wounded were left on the ground for three days following the battle. General Lee also refused to be the first to go after his wounded, and therefore thousands of wounded men from both sides died either from their wounds, hunger, thirst or exposure. Between May 7 and June 3, federal losses were 50,000 men, Confederate 32,000. The North could replace its losses fully, especially paying for troops, many of them immigrants from Europe, but the South could not.

1884-the first national political convention of a major party president over by an African-American met in the Exposition Building, Chicago, IL. John Roy Lynch, an African-American politician who has served three terms as a congressman from Mississippi, was nominated for temporary chairman of the Republican Party by Henry Cabot Lodge. The nomination was supported by Theodore Roosevelt and George William Curtis, and was carried by a vote of 424 for Lynch a to 384 for Powell Clayton. The convention nominated James Gillespie Blaine for president and General John Alexander Logan for vice president. November 4 th Grover Cleveland was elected president of the United Sates and Thomas A. Hendricks was elected vice-president. The electoral vote was Cleveland, 219, James G. Blaine, Republican of Maine, 182. The popular vote was Cleveland, 4,911,017 and Blaine 4,848,224. A very interesting presidential election as it was fought mainly with attacks on the reputation of the rival candidates. The Republican candidate, James G. Blaine, on his basis of letters he had written, was accused of having profited from the Credit Moblier scandal involving the building of the Union Pacific Railroad. His opponents sang: “Blaine, Blaine, James G. Blaine, the continual liar from the state of Maine.” The Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland, was accused of having fathered an illegitimate child, which in his forthright manner, he admitted. The turning point of the election was a remark made on October 9 by the Rev.. Samuel D. Burchard in New York, in the presence of Blaine, that the Democrats were the party of “Rum, Romanism and Rebellion.” Blaine did not disavow the remark, and the Irish-American Roman Catholics of New York were outraged. Cleveland carried the state by 1149 votes and thereby won the election. In 1888, President Grover Cleveland did not campaigning, saying it was beneath the dignity of the office of the president. Benjamin Harrison, the Republican candidate, brought the front porch campaign to its peak, and won. In 1892, Grover Cleveland campaigned and won the election as president along with Adlai E. Stevenson as vice-president. The electoral vote was 277 to Harrison's 145, and popular vote 5,554,414 to President Harrison's 5,190,802. The Populist Party won Electoral College votes, carrying Kansas, Colorado, Idaho and Nevada, 22 electoral votes and $1,027,329 for candidate James B. Weaver, perhaps the Ross Perot of his day.

1944--*JOHNSON, ELDEN H. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Army, 15th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Valmontone, Italy, 3 June 1944. Entered service at: East Weymouth, Mass. Birth: Bivalue, N.J. G.O. No.: 38, 16 May 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. Pvt. Johnson elected to sacrifice his life in order that his comrades might extricate themselves from an ambush. Braving the massed fire of about 60 riflemen, 3 machineguns, and 3 tanks from positions only 25 yards distant, he stood erect and signaled his patrol leader to withdraw. The whole area was brightly illuminated by enemy flares. Then, despite 20mm. machineguns, machine pistol, and rifle fire directed at him, Pvt. Johnson advanced beyond the enemy in a slow deliberate walk. Firing his automatic rifle from the hip, he succeeded in distracting the enemy and enabled his 12 comrades to escape. Advancing to within 5 yards of a machinegun, emptying his weapon, Pvt. Johnson killed its crew. Standing in full view of the enemy he reloaded and turned on the riflemen to the left, firing directly into their positions. He either killed or wounded 4 of them. A burst of machinegun fire tore into Pvt. Johnson and he dropped to his knees. Fighting to the very last, he steadied himself on his knees and sent a final burst of fire crashing into another German. With that he slumped forward dead. Pvt. Johnson had willingly given his life in order that his comrades might live. These acts on the part of Pvt. Johnson were an inspiration to the entire command and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the armed forces .

1945--CHRISTIAN, HERBERT F. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Army, 15th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Valmontone, Italy, 2-3 June 1944. Entered service at: Steubenville, Ohio. Birth: Byersville, Ohio. G.O. No.: 43, 30 May 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. On 2-3 June 1944, at 1 a.m., Pvt. Christian elected to sacrifice his life in order that his comrades might extricate themselves from an ambush. Braving massed fire of about 60 riflemen, 3 machineguns, and 3 tanks from positions only 30 yards distant, he stood erect and signaled to the patrol to withdraw. The whole area was brightly illuminated by enemy flares. Although his right leg was severed above the knee by cannon fire, Pvt. Christian advanced on his left knee and the bloody stump of his right thigh, firing his submachinegun. Despite excruciating pain, Pvt. Christian continued on his self-assigned mission. He succeeded in distracting the enemy and enabled his 12 comrades to escape. He killed 3 enemy soldiers almost at once. Leaving a trail of blood behind him, he made his way forward 20 yards, halted at a point within 10 yards of the enemy, and despite intense fire killed a machine-pistol man. Reloading his weapon, he fired directly into the enemy position. The enemy appeared enraged at the success of his ruse, concentrated 20-mm. machinegun, machine-pistol and rifle fire on him, yet he refused to seek cover. Maintaining his erect position, Pvt. Christian fired his weapon to the very last. Just as he emptied his submachine gun, the enemy bullets found their mark and Pvt. Christian slumped forward dead. The courage and spirit of self-sacrifice displayed by this soldier were an inspiration to his comrades and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the armed forces.

1946 -- Supreme Court bans segregation on interstate buses.
The court rules that Negro passengers can not be forced to sit at the back of buses. In 1947, April 9-23, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sponsors an interstate bus ride to test the ruling — Bayard Rustin, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Igal Roodenko, Joseph Felmet get arrested and serve 30 days on a chain gang. This is a particularly dangerous period in the US: lynchings in the south approach 1918 levels as Negro G.I.s return, talk of getting the rights they fought for.

1960- Clarence Gideon is arrested and charged with breaking into a poolroom in Florida. The appeal of Gideon's subsequent conviction led to the establishment of one of the chief principles of American criminal justice. Due to Gideon's perseverance, every criminal suspect is entitled to representation by a lawyer. Now incorporated into what are known as our Miranda rights-"You have the right to speak to an attorney. If you can't afford one, one will be provided for you"-this information must be announced by every officer while making an arrest.
When Florida decided to retry Gideon for the poolroom burglary in 1963, he had an experienced lawyer at his trial. The attorney easily poked holes in the prosecution's flimsy case, and Gideon was acquitted. New York Times writer Anthony Lewis wrote the stirring account of how one poor man changed the entire system in his 1965 book, Gideon's Trumpet, which later became a movie starring Henry Fonda.

1967- Aretha Franklin scores her first No. 1 hit with "Respect." She quickly followed it up with six more Top 10 singles, including "Chain of Fools" and "A Natural Woman." Franklin, the daughter of a Detroit minister, grew up singing gospel. She signed with Columbia Records in her early 20s. However, Columbia ignored her gospel roots and recorded her singing show tunes with large orchestras. Franklin broke through when she switched to Atlantic Records and began singing gospel-influenced blues, or soul, winning her the sobriquet, "Lady Soul." A hit on the pop charts as well as the R&B lists, she became one of the most influential singers in contemporary music.

This day in 1888 the famous comic baseball ballad “Casey at the Bat” was printed in the Sunday San Francisco Examiner. Appearing anonymously, it was written by Ernest L. Thayer, Recitation of “Casey at the Bat” became part of the repertoire of actor William Dwalt Hopper. The recitation took five minutes and 40 seconds. Hopper claimed to have recited it more than 10,000 times, the first being at Wallack’s Theater at New York, NY, in 1888.
The Story Behind the Poem Casey at the Bat
By R. J. Brown
When George Hearst decided to run for senator from California in 1885 he realized the need of an influential organ, and bought the San Francisco Examiner to promote his political ambitions. When the campaign was over, he presented it to his son, William Randolph Hearst who had just graduated from Harvard College. While in college the younger Hearst had been editor of the Harvard Lampoon.
When he went to California to edit the Examiner he took along with him three members of the Lampoon staff; Eugene Lent, F. H. Briggs, and Ernest L. Thayer. Each had nicknames -- Thayer's was "Phin." He wrote a humorous column on a regular basis for the Examiner and signed his columns with his nickname.
In the spring of 1888, Thayer wrote Casey and submitted it for publication. It appeared in the Examiner in the June 3, 1888 edition and was signed "Phin" as usual.
When Casey made its first appearance, nobody hailed it with shouts of joy or suspected that it would become immortal. A few weeks later, (exact date unknown) the New York Sun published the last 8 stanzas of the poem -- but signed its author as "Anon." Other than the Sun, it was just plain ignored by the public.
To become immortal, everyone (or thing) needs a press agent. Archibald Clavering Gunter, an author of novels, was "Casey's" press agent. Always on the look out for incidents to base some of his novels on, Gunter, living in New York, sought and actively read newspapers from around the country on a regular basis. When he read Casey for the first time, he clipped it out to save. He wasn't sure just what he would do with it, but he clipped and saved it anyway.
Many weeks later, in August of 1888, Gunter read that both the New York and Chicago baseball clubs would be attending the performance of the comedian De Wolf Hopper at the Wallack Theater in New York. Upon reading the announcement, Gunter instantly knew what he wanted to do with the clipping of Casey he had saved.
Gunter approached Hopper, a good friend, and offered the poem for him to recite as he felt the baseball teams would enjoy a comic baseball recitation. Hopper agreed and recited it that night. The rest, as they say, is history. From that point forward in time, Casey become immortal -- while a good poem to begin with, it took a recital before a group of "famous" baseball players by a professional comedian to bring it to life.
After reviews for Hopper's performance were published, three people came forward to claim authorship and demanded Hopper pay a royalty to use "their" poem. None could prove authorship, so Hopper kept it in his repertory.
Four or five years later, Thayer, living in Worcester, Massachusetts at the time, attended a performance of Hopper in Worcester. After the show, Thayer sent a note backstage requesting to meet Hopper. Thayer gave him the rights to perform it without paying any royalties.
Newspaper collectors should check their issues of New York papers for August, 1888 (exact day unknown) for reviews of Mr. Hopper's performance of Casey -- You may have an issue almost as important as the first printing of the poem in the June 3, 1888 San Francisco Examiner.
Casey at the Bat

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day:
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.
A straggling few got up to go in deep despair.
The rest cling to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought, "If only Casey could but get a whack at that--
We'd put up even money now, with Casey at the bat."
But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake,
And the former was a hoodoo, while the latter was a cake;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,
For there seemed but little chance of Casey getting to the bat.
But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,
And Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball;
And when the dust had lifted, and men saw what had occurred,
There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn - hugging third.
Then from five thousand throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
It pounded on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,
For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.
There was ease in Casey's manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Casey's bearing and a smile lit Casey's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,
No stranger in the crowd could doubt 'twas Casey at the bat.
Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt;
Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt;
Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance flashed in Casey's eye, a sneer curled Casey's lip.
And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped--
"That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one!" the umpire said.
From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore;
"Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted some one in the stand;
And it's likely they'd had killed him had not Casey raised his hand.
With a smile of Christian charity great Casey's visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the dun sphere flew;
But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said "Strike two!"
"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered "Fraud!"
But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that Casey wouldn't let that ball go by again.
The sneer has fled from Casey's lip, his teeth are clenched in hate;
He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate.
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey's blow.
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville-- great Casey has struck out.
— Ernest L. Thayer
