Leasing Foundation More Positive/
Predicts Equipment/Software Increase
Second Half of 2013 will see “modest” growth

While the first half was "slightly slower than expected growth in investment in the first and second quarter," the up-date to the 2013 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook is mixed. First, "The Foundation decreased its 2013 forecast from the 5.6 percent growth to what predicted in its Q2 Outlook, due to slightly slower than expected growth in investment in the first and second quarters.”

William G. Sutton, CAE, president of the foundation and CEO of the association, said the second half growth will be “modest.”

The Q3 report predicts “equipment investment will grow steadily over the next six months across most verticals due to reduced policy uncertainty and strong underlying economic fundamentals."

"According to the Foundation report, the U.S. economy is in its strongest position since the 2008-09 recession, but growth remains subpar.

“The economy continues to be buffeted by multiple headwinds, including high oil prices, weak global growth, fiscal consolidation and uncertainty about future fiscal reforms and other federal policies.”

At the same time, “the Foundation reports that the underlying fundamental growth drivers of the U.S. economy are in better shape than in recent years…"

"The report predicts growth will pick up in the second half of the year due to an improving housing market and auto sales, an energy renaissance, restoring of manufacturing, improving credit availability and rising employment."

William G. Sutton, CAE, President of the Foundation and President and CEO of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, said, “In the Q3 U.S. Economic Outlook, we have adjusted our equipment investment growth projection to reflect the current environment.

“With the housing and energy sectors continuing to hold strong, we still expect the second half of the year to show growth, albeit more modestly than originally anticipated.”

Highlights from the study include:

  • The U.S. economy is expected to generate positive but modest growth of 2.0 percent in 2013, a pace similar to 2012.
  • Equipment and software investment slowed in Q1 2013 to 4.1 percent (annualized), reflecting some of the headwinds facing the U.S. economy. In Q1, the sector was driven by strength in computers and software and in construction equipment. Q2 looked slightly weaker than Q1, but growth is expected to pick up in the second half of the year (Gartner reports PC shipments down 10.9% in second quarter, record fifth straight quarter loss: http://venturebeat.com/2013/07/10/rip-pc-shipments-down-11-as-pc-sales-drop-for-record-5-quarters/), with an overall forecast of 4.8 percent year-over-year growth in equipment and software investment in 2013.
  • Credit market conditions continue to improve, and many indicators have returned to levels not seen since the onset of the recession.

Trends in equipment investment include:

  • Agriculture equipment investment is expected to average near-flat growth on a year-over-year basis over the next three to six months.
  • Computers and software investment is expected to accelerate to more normal growth (5% to 8%) in the second half of the year.
  • Construction equipment investment continued growing rapidly, increasing 56 percent year-over-year in Q1 2013, boosted by a recovering housing sector. Above-average investment growth is expected to continue through the rest of the year.
  • Industrial equipment investment is expected to see average growth (1% to 3% year-over-year) through 2013.
  • Medical equipment investment will likely continue to stagnate, with potential to pick up later in the year.
  • Transportation equipment investment slowed for the third consecutive quarter, but some improvement in its leading indicators suggests that growth will pick up slightly in the next three to six months.

Sales Make it Happen
by Christopher "Kit" Menkin

You become what you attract

The title of this article not only applies to those in sales, but to companies themselves, and perhaps to life itself.

In my experience, new sales individuals are attracted mostly to large lease transactions. They get off the track easily, especially if they have set themselves up on a quota or are in a lull. They think one large lease will make up from the lack of "regular" leases they have been advised to follow.

Sometimes it is the "bragging" or "feeling good about yourself" that you are working on a very large deal. You tell your boss, your colleagues, your spouse, and others, about working on the large deal. Maybe it is the idea of the "big money" or in the circle of "top executives" or the perhaps feeling you have arrived because "look at the big deal I am working on."

Most large ticket deals that you first stumble into do not go together as they are either not credit worthy, (so why you are working on it?), or if they are credit worthy, when it comes time to place the order, they have gone with someone who has a much better rate. There is always someone with a better rate. There is no convenience or I am doing the lease because I like you. They will bid it out. Just like the old Wild West, there is always someone who is faster in the draw; especially if you are new to the game. However, most of the time the reason you are invited to work on the large transaction is they have nowhere else to go, and that is also where you will wind up.

This also applies to those in sales who rely on getting ten to fifteen points (or more) on a deal. They are not interested in cultivating a vendor or asking a customer for repeat business or cold calling. They want the deal that is almost impossible to put together, but somehow they do, or find someone who will do the lease. Sometimes it is the challenge, but in reality it is "I can make more money." All of a sudden, they find themselves boxed into this market and then it becomes not only the type of customer they find, but the type of customer that finds them.

The vendor who said he will send you all his business if you put this together--- what he sends you is the business his regular source that pays him a "spiff" can't do. You have become what you attract, the deals his regular leasing company can't do.

Mac Pollock at Key Lease used to say, “You sleep with dogs, you get fleas."

Another failing is visiting or telephoning customers who always have too much time, want to talk a lot, and you certainly enjoy the call. The reason they have a lot of time is business is not that good. If you have too many of these on your route during the day, your business will become as theirs is: not too good.

If you are a company that is making compromises on your credit or what direction you are going, you most likely will wind up there, too.

This also has a positive side: if that is what you are purposely trying to attract and have geared your operation for this "type," it is your goal. You chose it. It didn't' choose you.

This approach of "you become what you attract” also applies to your personal life, your circle of friends, accepting your children's circle of friends, and accepting what others want you to do.

Why I Became a CLP

John F. Harders
Sales Support
Arvest Equipment Finance

I first dove into the equipment finance industry in January 2004 with Regions Leasing located in Montgomery, Alabama. It was my first “real” job after graduating from Auburn University Montgomery. To say I was green was an understatement. Terms like RAROC, Subordinate debt, and TRAC were a foreign concept to me. I started as the “funder and titling clerk.” After a year, I moved to an audit position within the division. In 2006, I moved into a Sales Support role. I liked that role the best, since I interacted with the Commercial Relationship Managers across the Regions footprint in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Little did I know that all these different positions would help me down the road. I was enjoying the job very much until the Regions-AmSouth merger of 2006 derailed my career at Regions Leasing and left me with many questions as to what I would be doing next.

After leaving Regions Leasing in the summer of 2007, I joined Synovus Capital Finance in Columbus, Georgia as a Leasing Sales Representative I. It was at Synovus, where I first heard of the term “CLP” from Jeff Holland, a seasoned leasing professional from Birmingham, Alabama. I never really asked many questions about the CLP at that time; I just did my job duties. However, during my time at Synovus, I was able to attend my first equipment finance education conference. I attended a “Principles of Leasing II” workshop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The different terms and concepts that I initially heard at Regions were coming together. I started thinking from what point of view a lease is looked upon (Legal, Tax, or Accounting).

As my stupid luck would have it, my time at Synovus was short lived due to the deepening recession of 2008-2009; I was at a crossroads: Do I continue my career within the equipment finance industry or try something different?

Fortunately for me, I was lucky enough to get connected with Kyle Gilliam at Arvest Equipment Finance in the late summer of 2009. Before I knew it, I was flying out to Fort Smith, Arkansas to continue my equipment finance career. It was at Arvest, that Kyle Gilliam and Lori Dean encouraged and pushed me for my CLP designation.

Currently, Arvest Equipment Finance has five CLPs within our staff of ten; a 50% representation is something all of us at Arvest Equipment Finance can be proud of. My first big foray into meeting other equipment finance professionals was at the National Equipment Finance Association (NEFA) conference in Dallas, Texas in the spring of 2010. It was impressive to meet other equipment finance professionals from all over the country. This is where I also had my first CLP master review class. During the summer of 2012 I followed that up with an Institute for Leasing Professionals class sponsored by Great America Insurance in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was when I got back home from Cincinnati that I knew I was ready to sit for the much talked about CLP exam.

It was early July 2012 and test day had finally arrived.

The test is a marathon; you must keep moving and not second guess yourself. After eight hours, I was finished. You use every minute of those eight hours.

It was one of the most intense tests I have ever taken in my professional career. I was glad it was over, but anxious at the same time, as I waited approximately 30 days for the results. It was official when I rec’d a call from Reid Raykovich, the newly hired Executive Director, of the CLP Foundation on August 23, 2012 confirming that I had passed.

I was greatly relieved that all the reviewing and studying paid off. I was so excited to put that “CLP” in my signature block on all my e-mails and join that “elite” group of equipment finance professionals. Smith, Arkansas.

It’s hard to sum up what it means and how it feels to be a CLP. All I can say is if you are up for the challenge to be one of the best in this industry, you need to take that leap and go for it!

Fernando's View
By Fernando F. Croc

A sly comedy-drama ("The Bling Ring") and an inspired animated sequel ("Despicable Me 2") hit theaters, while a wild ride ("Spring Breakers") and classics both heartbreaking ("The Life of Oharu") and side-splitting ("The Producers") come to DVD.

In Theaters:

The Bling Ring (A24): Writer-director Sofia Coppola serves up a sly commentary on fame obsession with this intriguing drama, based on a true story. Set in the glitzy areas of Los Angeles, the story follows a trio of teenage girls, Rebecca (Katie Chang), Nicki (Emma Watson) and Laurie (Taissa Farmiga), as they take their fascination with celebrity one step further by breaking into the homes of Hollywood stars. Known as "the Bling Ring" for the girls' giddy fondness for expensive clothing and jewelry, they bring their friends along as they sneak into empty mansions and become front page news. Like Coppola's earlier portraits of alienated fame ("Lost in Translation," "Marie Antoinette"), the film is a visually lush, inventive and often humorous look at how people sometimes end up imprisoned by the sleek luxury they desire so much.

Despicable Me 2 (Universal Pictures): The 2010 animated feature gets a worthwhile sequel with this funny and charming comedy. When last seen, Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) was leaving his supervillain ways behind in favor of family life and work at with a jam company. However, trouble is brewing on the horizon as a secret laboratory is stolen and an investigation by the Anti-Villain League pulls Gru back into the business. Teamed up with wacky agent Lucy (Kirsten Wiig), he finds clues that lead up to a web of nefarious plans involving a former nemesis. But can Gru balance his adventures with his new family responsibilities? Directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, the film gives Pixar a run for its money with an abundance of inspired gags and creative 3-D animation that should satisfy audiences of children as well as parents.

Netflix Tip: The death of James Gandolfini (1961-2013) gives fans of the "Sopranos" star a chance to catch up with this exceptional actor in a variety of earlier roles. So check him out in "True Romance" (1993), "Get Shorty" (1995), "The Mexican" (2001), "In the Loop" (2009), and "Not Fade Away" (2012).

On DVD:

Spring Breakers (Lions Gate): Punk provocateur Harmony Korine ("Gummo") and Disney princess Selena Gomez ("Wizards of Waverly Place") are as unlikely a combination as you can imagine, yet both of them work together with infectious glee in this visually splashy, uninhibited romp. Gomez plays Faith, one of four college girls who embark on a law-breaking joyride during Spring Break. Along with Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson) and Cotty (Rachel Korine), she heads over to the partying grounds of Florida, where they quickly become involved with a strange rapper known as Alien (James Franco, in an insanely inspired performance). But will the girls fall in with Alien's tough and dangerous crowd, or will they turn back before it's too late? Though it's clearly not for everyone, Korine's no-holds-barred fable can be an exhilaratingly wild ride for game viewers.

The Life of Oharu (Criterion): Long available only in faded video copies, Japanese master Kenji Mizoguchi's extraordinary 1952 drama finally comes to DVD in a restored Criterion edition. Set in 17th-century Japan, the film follows the several upheavals of Oharu (Kinuyo Tanaka), whom we first meet as an aging prostitute looking back at her life. As a young woman she was a lady-in-waiting at her family's imperial court, who fell in love with a man below her rank (Toshiro Mifune). Disgrace descends upon her and her family, and soon she's exiled and forced to become a courtesan, enduring years of abusive masters and jealous colleagues. What sounds like a depressing story is redeemed by Mizoguchi's stunning direction and by the heroine's unbowing sense of serene endurance, embodied by Tanaka in a magnificent performance. A must-see classic. With subtitles.

The Producers (Shout! Factory): Before it was a record-breaking Broadway musical, "The Producers" in 1967 marked the memorable directorial debut of the inimitable Mel Brooks. Zero Mostel stars as Max Bialystock, a washed-up theatrical producer who's been reduced to romancing old ladies to finance his projects. However, with the help of jittery accountant Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder), he cooks up a grand scheme: to produce a play so bad it will surely flop, leading them to pocket the returned money. The play, named "Springtime for Hitler," brings together a group of zany characters, including a crazy German playwright (Kenneth Mars) and a zonked-out actor (Dick Shawn), but then a twist throws a wrench into their plan. So avoid the 2006 remake and just go straight to the original, delirious laugh riot.

Baseball Poem

After the Game
From the book
That Sweet Diamond
by Paul B. Janeczko, Carole Katchen
(Illustrator)

Bases yanked.
Infield groomed.
Tarp pulled
to the edge of the outfield grass,
smoothed.
Lowered flags folded.
Hisst, hisst, hisst of brooms
sweeping aisles and ramps.

Section by section,
the lights go out
until the field is dark,
and the ghosts of players
gone
to other lives
long
for another game
on that sweet diamond.

This Day in History

1656- Ann Austin and Mary Fisher, two Englishwomen, become the first Quakers to enter the American colonies when the ship carrying them lands at Boston in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The pair had come from Barbados, where Quakers had established a center for missionary work. The Religious Society of Friends, whose members are commonly known as Quakers, was a Christian movement founded by George Fox in England during the early 1650s. Quakers opposed central church authority, preferring to seek spiritual insight and consensus through egalitarian Quaker meetings. They also advocated sexual equality, and became some of the most outspoken opponents of slavery in early America. Shortly after arriving to Massachusetts, Austin and Fisher, whose liberal teachings enraged the Puritan colonial government, were arrested and jailed. After five years in prison, they were deported back to Barbados. In October of 1656, the Massachusetts colonial government enacted their first ban on Quakers, and on 20 October 1658, ordered Quakers banished from the colony "under penalty of death." On 27 October 1659, William Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson became the first Quakers to be executed in America when they were hanged from an elm tree on Boston Common. Mary Dyer was sentenced with them but reprieved and warned not to return to Boston. She did, and was hanged on 01 June 1860. In the mid-eighteenth century, John Woolman, an anti-slavery Quaker, traveled the American colonies, preaching and advancing the abolitionist cause. He also organized boycotts of products made by slave labor, and was responsible for convincing many Quaker communities to publicly denounce slavery. Another of many important abolitionist Quakers was Lucretia Mott, who worked on the Underground Railroad in the nineteenth century, helping lead fugitive slaves to freedom in the Northern states and Canada. In addition to her anti-slavery crusade, Mott later became a leader in the movement for women's rights
1767-birth of John Quincy Adams, the first U.S. president whose father had also been president of the United States. He was the sixth president and the son of the second president. He also has the uniqueness for serving 17 years as a member of Congress from Plymouth, Massachusetts, after serving one single term as president. He died February 23, 1848, at the House of Representatives (in the same room in which he had taken the presidential oath of Office March 4, 1825).
http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/ja6.html
1804- Alexander Hamilton was fatally wounded in a pistol duel with Aaron Burr. Hamilton had fought Burr’s run for the presidency in 1800, and for the governorship of New York in 1804, when Hamilton and others suspected that Burr intended to attach New York to the disgruntled New England states in a plan to disunite from the Union and form a northern confederacy. Jefferson and Burr had equal electoral votes, throwing the election to the House where each state would have one vote. There were 35 ballots in a row, deadlocked, until the 36th, and Burr became vice-president (they were separate election for the office at that time). Burr challenged Hamilton, who deliberately misfired before Burr fired with the intent to kill. Burr was later tried for treason in an attempt to have Southern states secede from the union and join Mexico. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/jul11.html
1719-James Smith, signer of the Declaration of Independence, born at Ireland, date unknown, died 1806 this day.
http://www.ushistory.org/declaration/signers/smith.htm
1786 - Morocco agreed to stop attacking American ships in the Mediterranean for a payment of $10,000.
1798 - President John Adams signed the bill that re-established the Marine Corps. The Continental Congress had disbanded the service in April of 1783 at the end of the American Revolution. The Marine Corps, however, recognizes its "official" birthday to be the date that the Second Continental Congress first authorized the establishment of the "Corps of Marines" on 10 November 1775. To add to the confusion of the Corps' actual "historical" birthday, on 1 July 1797 Congress authorized the Revenue cutters to carry, in addition to their regular crew, up to "30 marines." Congress directed the cutters to interdict French privateers operating off the coast during the Quasi-War with France and thought the additional firepower of 30 marines would be needed by the under-manned and under-gunned cutters. It is unknown if any "marines" were enlisted for service with the Revenue cutters during this time.
1804 - A duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton leaves Hamilton dead. Since New Jersey did not have a law against dueling at the time, Burr and Hamilton, both New Yorkers, crossed the Hudson to Weehawken, New Jersey. New York had banned the practice earlier, partly due to Hamilton's own campaign efforts after his son was killed in a duel.
1819--Birthday of Susan Bogert Warner - remarkably prolific and popular author said to be the first U.S. author to sell a million copies of a book. SBW collaborated on several with her sister Anna Bartlett Warner (08-31-1827) also a successful writer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Warner
1846-The American flag replaced the California Republic flag at Sutter's Fort today. As soon as he received word that the U.S. and Mexico were at war, he quickly enrolled local Anglo settlers, mostly recent immigrants from Missouri and Iowa, into a militia force. Numbering about 500 men, Fremont moved the battalion south toward Los Angeles. He soon took the city without a fight. In fact, except for one small engagement of Mexican cavalry against a force of Army Regulars lead by General Stephen Kearny, coming into California from New Mexico, the rest of the colony willingly accepted American control.
1848-Governor of California, Gen. Richard Barnes Mason, visited gold fields to gather information for a report to the U.S. Government. He was accompanied by his aide, Capt. William T. Sherman.
1855-Word arrived here that Los Angeles yesterday suffered the heaviest earthquake ever felt there. Hardly a building escaped damage. Residents said the quake lifted the ground and then twisted it. Bells of the San Gabriel Mission Church were thrown down by the tremor.
1864-General Jubal A. Early, commanding Confederate troops attempting to draw Union forces away from Richmond, broke through inadequate Union forces southeast of Frederick, MD., and entered the District of Columbia. His goal was to attack the White House, as was General Lee’s original goal when his troops were caught at Gettysburg. At this time, the Union was aware of the original thrust by Lee and his forces and had been re-enforcing the capital. Noting that hastily ordered federal reserves were arriving in significant numbers, Early withdrew the next night. He continued to harass Union forces from Shenandoah Valley until the Battle of Cedar Creek in October. He was elevated by Lee to Lt. General. He was very loyal to Lee and an ardent critic of General Longstreet.

1870- Snowden School of Alexandria, VA, was the first African-American School established by a state. The Snowden and Hallowell schools were the first black public schools in the City of Alexandria. In 1915, the Snowden School for Boys was destroyed in a fire, but the students were allowed to attend St. Mary’s Catholic Church School which was located at the time on Wolfe and Royal Streets. In 1920, the Snowden and Hallowell schools were consolidated, and the resulting school was named the Parker-Gray School. Parker-Gray School is named for John Parker, principal of the Snowden School for Boys, and Sarah Gray, principal of the Hallowell School for Girls.
1884-the first fountain pen that was practical was invented by ewis Edson Waterman and was manufactured by the L.E. Waterman Company in New York City. The first year about 200 fountain pens were manufactured. They were originally manufactured by hand. Waterman also invented the machinery to produce fountain pens in commercial quantities.

1905- A group of African American intellectuals and activists, led by W.E.B. Dubois, founded the Niagara Movement in Niagara Falls, Canada.     1914 -Babe Ruth made his debut in major league baseball when he took the mound in Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox against the Cleveland Indians. Ruth was relieved for the last two innings, but was the winning pitcher in a 4-3 game. During his rookie season, Ruth made $2,900. Six years later Ruth would pocket a $125,000 paycheck as a member of the New York Yankees.
1916-US President Woodrow Wilson signs the Federal Aid Road Act, the first grant-in-aid enacted by Congress to help states build roads. In 1916, roads throughout America were generally poor and most were susceptible to weather. The advent of the Ford Model T brought on new interests in higher standards for roads, and by the early 1900s, motorist clubs like the American Automobile Association (AAA) had rallied around the call for federally funded long-distance highways. Farmers balked at the idea, arguing that paying taxes so city people could go on car tours was unfair. As the car became more important to farmers, however, the ground became fertile for legislation to raise the quality or roads across the country.
1919-The first golfer to play 180 holes in one day was Edward Styles, who started the marathon contest at 5:53am at the Old York Road Country Club, Philadelphia, PA, played 180 hones, 10 rounds of golf, in 796 strokes, and finished playing at 8:32pm. The average time per round was one hour and nineteen minutes. He walked nearly 40 miles and took time out three times for a change of shoes and for refreshments. His average score was 79.6 strokes per round.

Attempts by 3 other officers to locate the weapon had resulted in failure, with each officer receiving wounds. 2d Lt. Craig located the gun and snaked his way to a point within 35 yards of the hostile position before being discovered. Charging headlong into the furious automatic fire, he reached the gun, stood over it, and killed the 3 crew members with his carbine. With this obstacle removed, his company continued its advance. Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U S. Army, 32d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Anamo, New Guinea, 11 July 1944. Entered service at: Janesville, Wis. Birth: Ft. Atkinson, Wis. G.O. No.: 17, 13 March 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty near Anamo, New Guinea, on 11 July 1944. S/Sgt. Endl was at the head of the leading platoon of his company advancing along a jungle trail when enemy troops were encountered and a fire fight developed. The enemy attacked in force under heavy rifle, machinegun, and grenade fire. His platoon leader wounded, S/Sgt. Endl immediately assumed command and deployed his platoon on a firing line at the fork in the trail toward which the enemy attack was directed. The dense jungle terrain greatly restricted vision and movement, and he endeavored to penetrate down the trail toward an open clearing of Kunai grass. As he advanced, he detected the enemy, supported by at least 6 light and 2 heavy machineguns, attempting an enveloping movement around both flanks. His commanding officer sent a second platoon to move up on the left flank of the position, but the enemy closed in rapidly, placing our force in imminent danger of being isolated and annihilated. Twelve members of his platoon were wounded, 7 being cut off by the enemy. Realizing that if his platoon were forced farther back, these 7 men would be hopelessly trapped and at the mercy of a vicious enemy, he resolved to advance at all cost, knowing it meant almost certain death, in an effort to rescue his comrades. In the face of extremely heavy fire he went forward alone and for a period of approximately 10 minutes engaged the enemy in a heroic close-range fight, holding them off while his men crawled forward under cover to evacuate the wounded and to withdraw. Courageously refusing to abandon 4 more wounded men who were Iying along the trail, 1 by 1 he brought them back to safety. As he was carrying the last man in his arms he was struck by a heavy burst of automatic fire and was killed. By his persistent and daring self-sacrifice and on behalf of his comrades, S/Sgt. Endl made possible the successful evacuation of all but 1 man, and enabled the 2 platoons to withdraw with their wounded and to reorganize with the rest of the company.
Lt. Craig and his platoon, in a position devoid of cover and concealment, encountered the fire of approximately 100 enemy soldiers. Electing to sacrifice himself so that his platoon might carry on the battle, he ordered his men to withdraw to the cover of the crest while he drew the enemy fire to himself. With no hope of survival, he charged toward the enemy until he was within 25 yards of them. Assuming a kneeling position, he killed 5 and wounded 3 enemy soldiers. While the hostile force concentrated fire on him, his platoon reached the cover of the crest. 2d Lt. Craig was killed by enemy fire, but his intrepid action so inspired his men that they drove the enemy from the area, inflicting heavy casualties on the hostile force.

1969--ROBERTS, GORDON R. Medal of Honor
Rank and organization: Sergeant (then Sp4c.), U.S. Army, Company B, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. Place and date: Thua Thien Province, Republic of Vietnam, 11 July 1969. Entered service at: Cincinnati, Ohio. Born: 14 June 1950, Middletown, Ohio. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Roberts distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman in Company B, during combat operations. Sgt. Roberts' platoon was maneuvering along a ridge to attack heavily fortified enemy bunker positions which had pinned down an adjoining friendly company. As the platoon approached the enemy positions, it was suddenly pinned down by heavy automatic weapons and grenade fire from camouflaged enemy fortifications atop the overlooking hill. Seeing his platoon immobilized and in danger of failing in its mission, Sgt. Roberts crawled rapidly toward the closest enemy bunker. With complete disregard for his safety, he leaped to his feet and charged the bunker, firing as he ran. Despite the intense enemy fire directed at him, Sgt. Roberts silenced the 2-man bunker. Without hesitation, Sgt. Roberts continued his l-man assault on a second bunker. As he neared the second bunker, a burst of enemy fire knocked his rifle from his hands. Sgt. Roberts picked up a rifle dropped by a comrade and continued his assault, silencing the bunker. He continued his charge against a third bunker and destroyed it with well-thrown hand grenades. Although Sgt. Roberts was now cut off from his platoon, he continued his assault against a fourth enemy emplacement. He fought through a heavy hail of fire to join elements of the adjoining company which had been pinned down by the enemy fire. Although continually exposed to hostile fire, he assisted in moving wounded personnel from exposed positions on the hilltop to an evacuation area before returning to his unit. By his gallant and selfless actions, Sgt. Roberts contributed directly to saving the lives of his comrades and served as an inspiration to his fellow soldiers in the defeat of the enemy force. Sgt. Roberts' extraordinary heroism in action at the risk of his life were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.
