Client Asking for Career Advice
by Scott Wheeler, CLFP
A young commercial equipment finance and leasing originator with four years of experience asked for career advice - he likes the industry. He is an above average producer but has seen his income drop in the first 5 months of 2024. Credit requirements continue to be tight and rates continue to be high. He admitted to being frustrated. My response included the following:
- The commercial equipment finance and leasing industry is experiencing a necessary transition and the future is bright. Now is the time to prepare for future growth and greater income potential.
- The commercial equipment and leasing industry is a highly lucrative career path for professionals who are committed to assisting businesses acquire commercial equipment.
- Over my 40+ year career, I have seen multiple industry transitions. The industry always quickly adapts, changes, and evolves to become stronger. Professionals who are part of the evolution become industry leaders. As an originator, you must embrace change, understand the reasoning for the change, and be capable of articulating the changes.
- Immediately start focusing on the future; set personal career goals and spend all your energy working toward those goals. There are no limits in the industry. You control your own destiny (ex: top producer, team leader, VP of sales, company executive, entrepreneur).
- Engage with a mentor to help expedite your personal success. Become a mentor to a younger professional (by helping others you will become better yourself).
You are sitting on a gold mine that is waiting to be tapped. Be committed to learning more, engaging with more stakeholders, and moving your career forward.

Where Automakers Sell Their Cars
in the World - You'd Be Surprised
By Visualcapitalist
From this sample of 10 major car brands, we can see that Chevrolet had the highest North American sales concentration in 2023, at 66% of sales. Chevrolet’s next biggest market is Latin America, which represented 22% of sales.
This is in contrast to Ford, where Europe is instead its second largest market (accounting for 26% of 2023 sales).
Moving on to the German automakers included in this graphic, all three brands sell a significant portion of their cars in China. For BMW and Volkswagen, China accounts for an even larger portion of sales than Europe.
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW, said, “China is the place to be. Our continued success in the world’s largest automotive market can only go hand in hand with the continuous growth and development of our local footprint in the country.
“BMW has been one of the most successful foreign automakers in China, selling over 826,000 vehicles in the country in 2023. In April 2024, the company announced an additional $2.76 billion investment for its plant in Shenyang, a city north east of Beijing.”
