Full text of June 30 Fed statement
The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to raise its target for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 3-1/4%.
The Committee believes that, even after this action, the stance of monetary policy remains accommodative and, coupled with robust underlying growth in productivity, is providing ongoing support to economic activity. Although energy prices have risen further, the expansion remains firm and labor market conditions continue to improve gradually. Pressures on inflation have stayed elevated, but longer-term inflation expectations remain well contained.
The Committee perceives that, with appropriate monetary policy action, the upside and downside risks to the attainment of both sustainable growth and price stability should be kept roughly equal. With underlying inflation expected to be contained, the Committee believes that policy accommodation can be removed at a pace that is likely to be measured. Nonetheless, the Committee will respond to changes in economic prospects as needed to fulfill its obligation to maintain price stability.
Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Alan Greenspan, Chairman; Timothy F. Geithner, Vice Chairman; Susan S. Bies; Roger W. Ferguson, Jr.; Richard W. Fisher; Edward M. Gramlich; Donald L. Kohn; Michael H. Moskow; Mark W. Olson; Anthony M. Santomero; and Gary H. Stern.
In a related action, the Board of Governors unanimously approved a 25-basis-point increase in the discount rate to 4-1/4%. In taking this action, the Board approved the requests submitted by the Boards of Directors of the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, and San Francisco.

“2nd Quarter Leasing Business Up!” says ELA MLI
The Equipment Leasing Association (ELA) Monthly Leasing Index (MLI) reflects the increase in employment ads here at Leasing News, plus what we have been hearing direct from the industry: The second quarter is better than the first quarter.
While the ELA press release emphasized a " a very slight downturn for the month... New business volume decreased from April's $4.7 billion to $4.04 billion in May," comparing the trend of the first quarter to the second quarter shows $3.66 to $4.37 for the first two months of the second quarter.
Delinquencies (net of unearned income billed but not yet received) remained virtually unchanged in May.
Credit approval ratios barely changed from 76.0 percent over April's 76.3 percent.
Average charge-offs increased, coming in at 0.42 percent from April's 0.36 percent, but were much lower than the first quarter, another positive trend.
Aging of Receivables remained basically the same with some minor changes in over 30 days, but again, better than the first quarter.
The total number of employees remained relatively the same: May, 9,243 compared to April, 9,259, but again, showing a health upward trend, particularly compared to the first quarter.
Overall from the companies who participated, business is on the increase. We can assume that June will be better or the same as May, but we head into July with its long holiday and then into August with many vacations days before school starts, so it will be difficult for the up-ward trend to continue, but time will tell as September may pull up the quarter as it has done in the past, and the fourth quarter is still a period to look forward to.
The MLI is issued on the 30th of every month and provides trend analysis across all major performance areas of lessors, including new business volume, aging of receivables, average loss, credit approval ratios and number of employees.
Companies who participated are:
ADP Credit Corporation
Amsouth Leasing Corporation
Bank of America
Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation
CIT
De Lage Landen Financial Services
First American Equipment Finance
GreatAmerica Leasing
Hitachi Credit America Corp.
HP Financial Services
John Deere Credit Corporation

LaSalle National Leasing Corporation
Marlin Leasing Corporation
RBS Asset Finance
Siemens Financial Services

Story Credit Lessors
These companies specialize in "C" and "D" credits, often news businesses, or businesses where the principal(s) have Beacon score around 600 or previous difficulties; meaning to become comfortable with the credit and financial situation you need to learn the "story" to make a positive decision, often requiring further security, shorter term, or additional guarantors. Many of these companies may also be a "B," but appear otherwise without the "story" to understand the full financial picture.
(To qualify for this list, the company must be a lessor and not a broker or superbroker, along with an acceptable Better Business Bureau Rating and no history of complaints at Leasing News. We reserve the right to not list a company who does not meet these qualifications.)

(D) ABCO Leasing, Inc. in Seattle area has been operating since 1974 serving the broker community. We required full financial disclosure on every transaction. We do story transaction, but do not like to refer to them as "C" of "D" credits. We think of therm as "A" type credits that have not been discovered yet. In actuallity, we do not really like to look at what most describes as "D" credits.

Odds and Ends
“In your article about the effect of writing off Norvergence leases, the owner of the leasing company said that writing off the leases did not effect his bottom line or equity position. My understanding of accounting is when you write off a receivable it flows through the net income as a loss and correspondingly as a reduction in the equity account.
“As to his position that he still intends to collect this
money so it really didn't effect those two items, I wish him good luck
especially having read your news items recently!”

NorVergence Founders Back in Business
The name of his new business is Network Digital Office Systems, Inc.
It was formed by a lawyer, as is a common practice, so Mr. Salzano's name does not appear.
http://leasingnews.org/PDF/Monthly_report_May_05.pdf
Status Report on Peter J. Salzano May 31,2005
(note the former president of NorVergence filed personal bankruptcy and a requirement is to keep up to date personal assets and liabilities. It should also be noted that many have told Leasing News the “real” president was his brother Thomas N. Salzano. He could not be named as president as he had a “nefarious” past.
According to the New Jersey Register Record:
Running a phone company into bankruptcy is nothing new for Thomas N. Salzano. Before his ill-fated venture, Newark-based NorVergence, folded last month, Salzano headed up a different phone company.
In the early 1990s, after running a freight consulting business, Salzano founded Minimum Rate Pricing Inc. in Bloomfield, a reseller of residential long-distance phone service that eventually hired hundreds of people but ran afoul of federal regulators in 1998 when customers complained that MRP illegally switched their long-distance, a technique known as slamming.
A settlement was reached, and MRP agreed to pay a $1.2 million fine to the Federal Communications Commission. But over the next few months, MRP's business imploded.
The company, which bought its long-distance service wholesale from WorldCom (now MCI), racked up $67 million in debt, according to court papers, and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, along with some related companies, in February 1999.
"It was out of control," recalled Brian Engle, a turnaround specialist brought in by the creditors.” They weren't looking at their costs; the philosophy was, more revenue will solve the problem."
Months later, creditors battled in court for the remaining scraps, saying in court papers that Salzano set up "The Telecom Education Trust," a college trust fund for Salzano's five children, into which was funneled $250,000 in company funds.
Warren Martin, a New Jersey lawyer who represented the creditors' committee, said a judge ordered that money returned.
Creditors also accused Salzano of transferring $2.7 million in company funds to a Swiss bank while the company was in bankruptcy proceedings. But the creditors decided it wasn't worth the cost and effort to pursue those charges, Martin recalled. "Essentially, the business went away and there was nothing left but a bunch of lawsuits," he said.
In the end, the bankruptcy court allowed WorldCom, the largest creditor, to buy the remaining MRP customers, using part of its debt as payment, Engle said.
MRP customers became WorldCom customers.
And Salzano started to plan his next venture: NorVergence.
Here are Peter J. Salazano's assets and liabilities that he publically declared to the bankruptcy court for the month ending May 30,2005

THE EAEL AND BALTIMORE TRADITION CONTINUES- Once again the 7th annual Crab feast - networking event sponsored by the EAEL in Baltimore was truly a success. 80 Leasing individuals gathered for a fun filled evening and leasing experience.
The legendary Chuck Thompson- a Baltimore sports announcer used the phase " AINT THE BEER COLD" to punctuate his play by play calls of the Baltimore Orioles. As a listener to his broadcast you quickly knew that something good had happened; a well timed home-run or superior double play, when he used this famous phase. Well all that I can say was there was no doubt that the " BEER WAS COLD"
at Gunning Restaurant in the Baltimore area on June 9th and the EAEL hit another home run in sponsoring its annual Crab feast.
The better news is that the attendees were a buzz with positive attitudes about the leasing climate in 2005. Individuals were optimistic about leasing transactions that they have funded so far in 2005 and hopeful that the trends will continue for the second half of 2005. "Wall Street" has been debating for the last year whether the business climate is speeding ahead or falling behind. This EAEL event was a true indication that " Main Street" leasing professionals are experiencing positive trends and that the individuals who attended are ready to grab the brass ring in the ever changing leasing industry.
My hat is off to the EAEL and the individual hosts: Nancy Pistorio- Madison Capital, Bruce Winter- FSG Leasing and Dennis Horner - The Equipment Leasing Company for continuing this annual tradition...
an excellent opportunity for the leasing community to gather and share its thoughts.
I will see you all at the FALL EXPO - Mark your calendars September 19, 2005.
We are all looking forward to hearing the keynote speakers at the Fall Expo: The Honorable Bill Bradley and
Dr. Irwin Kellner , Chief Economist of North Fork Bank

Tipping for Wine
by Kit Menkin
One of the questions I am asked about wine is what to leave for a tip when the dinner includes an expensive bottle of wine. This is not fully answered by the Wine Spectator, the Chaine des Rotisseuers, Order of Mondial, and various top restaurants also skirt a direct response. Most people include the cost of the wine along with the price of the dinner, including the sales tax.
With a good bottle of wine starting at $50 and more at quality restaurants, or even a lot more at “fine” restaurants, often it appears you are being penalized for ordering a comparable wine to marry your entrees.
Often when you have a party of eight or more, a gratuity is automatically added at 17% to 18% of the total dinner bill. At a wedding rehearsal dinner in Houston for Sue's daughter, I ordered the wine for a party of 18 at this Italian restaurant (the food and service was outstanding. ) When I got the dinner bill, I had words first with the waiter and then the manger of the restaurant as I thought 20% automatic gratuity was too high. The discussion was not at the table, I made sure it was out of ear shot of the guests, and the manger was the one who decanted both the large bottles of wine.)
We had white wine before the main course. When I saw on the list an Imperial bottle of an '85 Barolo reserve, I ordered it for the main entrees. I thought it was a great price for the wine and could not pass it up. In fact, the party liked it so much, I ordered a second, which turned out to be a later vintage, 1988, as I had ordered the only 1985 they had. It was not as good, but only by degrees. It was still a memorable wine. Of course, we had dessert wine with the wonderful Italian desserts. And to sum it up, it was a wonderful evening until they presented me with the bill.
All the wine for the dinner was over three times the cost of the food. I reacted to the automatically adding 20% to the cost of the wine ( which also included the sales tax) to the tab.
As a rule of thumb, according to the Wine Spectator, you should never pay less than 15% gratuity for everything.
If the service is poor, the minimum is 10%. They recommend 20% for a good meal, including the wine, despite the price of the wine. They assume someone is going to buy a $25 or $30 bottle of wine. Or perhaps bring their own wine to the restaurant and pay corkage ( which they highly recommend.)
The Chaine des Rôtisseurs have a similar policy, except they encourage a 25% for excellent service, despite the cost of the wine. If you are having a top dinner and top wine, you are expected to pay for the top service as you are a member of the Chaine, and to act accordingly.
It is also recommended that you give the Wine Stewart of Sommelier a tip, as well as the Captain, if he gives you service beyond, such as at Le Bernadin in New York City, where it appears the captain is very active at his group of tables.
You actually write on the receipt the tip, and who it goes to. 10% for the Sommelier if he is active recommending the restaurant, as well as at least 5% to 10% for the captain.
Now this is what the late famous bon vivant and chef extraordinaire Charles Beard said, many years ago, and I basically follow it: 20% of the cost of the food is the minimum tip to the waiters ( exclude sales tax—also easier to do the math) 10% of the wine cost ( exclude sales tax) and mark this for the sommelier, and if not, mark wine steward, still 10%. 5% for the captain, if he is of help, otherwise not.
If you bring your own wine, although there is corkage, let your conscious be your guide. If no corkage is charged, you should raise your tip. As a rule of thumb, I rarely, if ever, will bring a bottle from my cellar to a restaurant. I think it is poor manners to do so. I go out and listen to the waiter or wine steward about what goes best with their food. I don't need to show off what wine I have. I also would like to see the restaurant stay in business.
Now a wedding or a special dinner or event when we are all getting what they serve, and there never is a tip, I always bring a couple of magnums to share with the entire table. I choose my seat, when I first enter, and put the wine under it. I can tell you those who have been with me at such events, always come over to see what I am having---with an empty glass in their hand.
Oh, yes, who won at the wedding rehearsal dinner. They did. It was their written policy 20% gratuity on large parties; they also had to have special help in decanting the large bottles, and our discussion was getting so long and I could see people at our table looking at me, so I gave in. I was on the verge of ruining the evening for them. I think they knew I was from California, would never see me again, and if I had the money to buy two large bottles of wine, I had the money to pay the full 20% on everything.
The wedding was great, and the party at the rehearsal dinner talked a lot about the dinner and the “fabulous” wine.
I guess it goes back to that old adage, “If you really liked the wine, you never paid too much for it.”
Coda: If you want to know if you got a value for your wine, or what the wine price is today, go to www.winezap.com Type in the vintage (year) and name of the producer with wine type or geographic area, such as 1995 Chateau Lynch Bages Pauillac .
Even 1995 Lynch Bages will work, or 1999 Viader

"These two developments signal the beginning of a new era at Applied Financial," said Dave DiCesaris, CEO. "Jim brings with him a deep knowledge of the company's day-to-day operations, the industry and great lease documentation expertise."

"With the addition of Jim to our executive team, I'll be able to concentrate on macro initiatives that will move our existing product offerings and competitive advantages to the next level," said DiCesaris. The new $25 million operating line with Wells Fargo Bank brings additional direct lending capabilities to the company. It gives Applied Financial access to a lower cost of funds, as well as a firm-term sublimit that does not require a third-party takeout commitment.
"We've always had the capacity to fund transactions with our own money for short periods of time," said DiCesaris. This Day in American History
1730-The most populous area of colonial America was New England, with 275,000 Europeans. By 1760, this number rose to 425,000, and at the close of the revolution to 800,000.
1733-Forty Jews, admitted to Georgia colony by its proprietors, settled in Savannah.
1778-The first foreign diplomat accredited to the U.S., Conrad Alexandre Gerard, arrived in America. He had been appointed by King Louis XVI of France. The tide of the Revolutionary War changed when France not only lent the new colonies money, but officers, soldiers, arms, and ships. At Yorktown, the victory that won the war, Frenchman outnumbered Americans almost three to one! Washington had 11,000 men engaged in the battle, while the French had at least 29,000 soldiers and sailors. The 37 French ships-of-the-line played a crucial role in trapping the 8,700 strong British army and winning the engagement.
1800- The earliest recorded Methodist camp meeting in America was held in Logan County Kentucky, near the Gaspar River Church.
1807-birthday of Thomas Green Clemson. The man for whom Clemson University was named, born at Philadelphia, PA. The mining engineer and agriculturist married John C. Calhoun's daughter, Anna. Clemson bequeathed the old Calhoun plantation to South Carolina and Clemson Agricultural College ( Now Clemson University) was founded there in 1889. Clemson died at Clemson, SC, April 6, 1888.

1835-The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad made its trial run from Baltimore, MD, to Washington, DC, starting railroad service to the federal capital.
1843 -An alligator falls from the sky onto Anson Street in a thunderstorm
1847- the first US postage stamps were issued by the US Postal Service, a 5 cent stamp picturing Benjamin Franklin and a 10 cent stamp honoring George Washington. Stamps had been issued by private postal services in the US prior to this date. (Don't forget, the postage goes up today, starting at 37 cents for a regular stamp)
(last part of:http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/jul01.html )
1852-the first body to lie in state in the US Capitol rotunda was that of Senator Henry Clay, who died in Washington, DC, at the age of 75 on June 29,1842. His body was placed in the rotunda, where it was displayed for the public to pay their respects, prior to interment in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, KY.
1859-Amherst and Williams played the first intercollegiate baseball game, with Amherst winning, 73-32. The next day Williams evened the score by defeating Amherst in a chess match.
http://www.henryclay.org/hc.htm
1861- 1st public schoolhouse opens at Washington & Mason St, SF
1862- Congress outlaws polygamy (1st time); “an act to punish and prevent the practice of polygamy in the territories of the United Sates and other places, and disapproving and annulling certain acts of the legislative assembly of the territory of Utah.” Most of the settles in Utah belonged to the Mormon Church ( Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), which encouraged men to marry multiple wives. Little effort was made to enforce this law. The first anty-polygamly law with teeth was the act of March 22, 1883, known as the Edmunds law, which defined simultaneous marriages as bigamy and prescribed loss of citizenship as a penalty. It legitimized children born in polygamy before January 1, 1883.

1862-the Bureau of Internal Revenue was established by an act of Congress. The same day, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill levying a 3 percent income tax on annual incomes of $600—$10,000, and 5 percent on incomes of more than $10,000. The revenues were to help pay for the Civil War. This tax law actually went into effect, unlike an earlier law passed August 5,1861, making it the first income tax levied by the US. It was rescinded in 1872.
1862-The Morrill Land Grant Act was passed. This federal legislation led to the creation of the Land Grant universities and Agricultural Experiment Stations in each state.
1863- After the Southern success at Chancellorsville, VA, Confederate General Robert E. Lee led his forces on an invasion of the North, initially targeting Harrisburg, PA. As Union forces moved to counter the invasion, the battle lines were eventually formed at Gettysburg, PA, in one of the Civil War's most crucial battles. Today began the Battle of Gettysburg, where General Robert E. Lee made a desperate bid to smash through Union forces and approach Washington, D.C. from the west. This was a crucial turning point in the war. Quite by accident, and not foreseen by General Lee, General George G. Meade stumbled upon the advance accidentally at Gettysburg, Pa. Lee's assaults on federal positions, trying to move out of this encounter, brought extremely heavy losses to both sides. On the climactic third day of the battle (July 3), Lee ordered an attack on the center of the Union line, later to be known as Pickett's Charge. When the famous charge of Gen. George E. Pickett's division failed, with one unit leaving 3393 out of 4800 men dead or wounded on the field, the battle was lost to the South. The 15,000 rebels were repulsed, ending the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 4, both sides were exhausted. On July 5, Lee's army retreated, listing more than one-third of the troops as casualties in the failed invasion, never to return to northern territory. Union General George Meade initially failed to pursue the retreating rebels, allowing Lee's army to escape across the rain-swollen Potomac River. He felt ill prepared for the action, particularly after initiating the battle without preparation and in “surprise.” Historians say he missed an opportunity. They were not there, but make this observation primarily because Meade was not a very good tactician or leader of men. His men labeled him “timid” and used a stronger word we can't print here. The South suffered 30,000 killed, wounded, or missing. The North, 23,000.

1876- Birthday of Susan Keating Glaspell, U.S. novelist and playwright who won the 1930 Pulitzer prize for her play Allison's House. She wrote no further plays but continued to write novels that examined women's struggles with biology, conservative mores, and other influences on her freedom and happiness. Her early stories were steeped in the Iowa of her childhood and after the success of her first novel, she resettled in New York, married a wealthy home-town boy and lived and romped in Greenwich Village. The bulk of her noteworthy writing was done after his death in 1924. She remarried briefly.

1890- 2,000 Census Bureau clerks began the daunting task of tallying the results of the country's 11th census, aided for the first time by mechanical calculating devices. Some 45,000 census counters had spent the entire month of June counting America's 60 million-plus population, using hole punches to record the results of their surveys by punching out designated spots on the card, like a train conductor punches a ticket. Later, those cards were counted by a tabulating machine invented by 29-year-old Herman Hollerith. Hollerith's counting machine had soundly beaten other proposed counting methods in a contest sponsored by the Census Bureau. Hollerith later founded the Tabulating Machine Company, which, through a series of mergers and reorganizations, eventually became IBM.
1893-President Grover Cleveland boarded the yacht Oneida for surgery to be performed in secret on a cancerous growth in his mouth. As this was during the 1893 depression, secrecy was thought desirable to avoid further panic by the public. The whole left side of Cleveland's jaw was removed as well as a small portion of his soft palate. A second, less extensive operation was performed July 17. He was later fitted with a prosthesis of vulcanized rubber that he wore until his death June 24, 1908. A single leak of the secret was plugged by Cleveland's Secretary of War, Daniel Lamont, the only member of the administration to know about the surgery. The illness did not become public knowledge until an article appeared Sept 22, 1917, in the Saturday Evening Post, written by William W. Keen, who assisted in the surgery.

Dorsey, who composed more than 1,000 gospel songs and hundreds of blues songs in his lifetime, died Jan 23, 1993 at Chicago, ILL.

1903- Irna Phillips, U.S. radio script writer who developed the genre of the radio and TV soap opera. Starting with a ten-minute drama on a Chicago radio station (it tried to block her further progress), in 1932 she sold a similar program to the networks and the Queen of the Soaps was on her way. She wrote a dozen different shows and by 1943 she had five daily shows going at one time including the enduring Guiding Light, hiring a staff of writers for the daily scripting. When TV destroyed the careers of so many writers, IP moved easily into the format starting with Guiding Light (1952), As the World Turns (1956), and Days of Our Lives (1965), the most famous radio and TV soap operas of history. Her writing was superior and many have mourned the passing of her higher standards. Died 23 December 1973, Chicago, IL.

Her suit against a contract she had signed as a beginning actor broke the film studios lifetime monopoly on contract actors. It limited acting contracts to seven years (including suspensions). Her sister was Joan Fontaine (10-22-1917) who also won an Academy Award. The sisters were never friendly. De Havilland grew up in Los Gatos and Saratoga, visiting often, as she had many friends here and was quite the local celebrity to have to parties.

Baseball Poem
Summer of ' 85
I saw Springsteen leap
from a speaker twice his height,
land on thick-heeled biker boots in mid-song,
rained on by his own sweat,
the guitar's thunder,
the packed house, the roar,
just a good journeyman nothing more
is what he said...
I saw Pete at forty plus
take middle-aged flight,
chest plowing packed clay,
an ungloved hand grabbing for third,
dusting off the late tag,
just a good journeyman the look said
as he turned toward home plate, undenied...
I saw Christopher Reeves in the stands,
taking notes...
