With Thanksgiving just around the corner, let’s seek some choice cinematic offerings to go with our turkey and gravy and pumpkin pie. So check out these seasonal classics, and have a safe and happy holiday.

5 Against the House (1955): Thanksgiving movies are usually restricted to comedies and dramas, so it’s a good idea to broaden horizons with the occasional genre thriller. This taut suspense caper, directed by no-nonsense film noir specialist Phil Karlson (“Kansas City Confidential”), offers plenty of tension and action as it chronicles a heist planned over the course of the Thanksgiving break. The crime kicks off as an intellectual exercise cooked up by a pair of colleagues (Alvy Moore and Kerwin Matthews), just to see if a Reno casino could be robbed. Speculation grows into scheming as more people get involved in the plan, including a nightclub singer (Kim Novak) and a war vet with personal problems (Brian Keith). Mixing excitement with breeziness, this is an offbeat escapade worth discovering.

Avalon (1990): An Oscar winner for “Rain Man,” writer-director Barry Levinson has often explored his native Baltimore with a series of loving autobiographical dramas, such as “Diner” and “Tin Men.” Arguably most heartfelt of all is this gentle portrait of a Polish-Jewish family that comes to America in the early 1900s dreaming of a land of opportunity. Unfolding mainly during the Eisenhower years, the story centers on kindly patriarch Sam Krichinsky (Armin Mueller-Stahl) and his close-knit clan, which includes son Jules (Aidan Quinn) and nephew Izzy (Kevin Pollak), as they live in the suburbs and pursue the American Dream. Brimming with fine performances and nostalgic details as it alternates between comedy and drama, Levinson’s movie features a particularly memorable Thanksgiving dinner.

Soul Food (1997): In the tradition of “Like Water for Chocolate” and “Eat Drink Man Woman,” here’s a Thanksgiving family tale that’s a veritable feast for cinematic foodies. Chronicling the emotional travails of an African-American clan in Chicago, the story hinges on the beloved matriarch, “Big Mama” Joseph (Irma P. Hall), who must be hospitalized following a bout with diabetes. Her absence leaves a void in the eyes of young Ahmad (Brandon Hammond), who sees his mother (Vivica A. Fox) and aunts (Vanessa L. Williams and Nia Long) struggling to keep things together with their respective men. Featuring mouthwatering showcases of the titular cooking, George Tillman Jr.’s likable comedy-drama blends relationship arcs with lavish meal sequences for a hearty, old-fashioned experience.

The Weather Man (2005): Though best known for large-scale spectacle like the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, director Gore Verbinski goes small and intimate with this introspective comedy-drama. Nicolas Cage stars as David Spritz, a Chicago TV weatherman finding himself face to face with a midlife crisis. His ex-wife Noreen (Hope Davis) has moved on, and he’s grown estranged from his children, especially his shy daughter, Shelly (Gemmenne de la Pena). To top it all off, he’s long lived in the shadow of his father (Michael Caine), a famous writer. Determined to find something to be proud of in his life, David sets out to reconnect with his family during Thanksgiving—and realize his dream of riding a parade float. Anchored by Cage’s soulful twitchiness, Verbinski’s film brims with oddball melancholy.

Thanksgiving (2023): Horror stalwart Eli Roth (“Cabin Fever”) adds blood to the gravy in this enjoyably gruesome seasonal slasher. Taking place in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the plot kicks off with a Black Friday sale pushed to grisly extremes. Cut to one year later, when a series of murders shake up the town, all of them involving people linked to the store’s ill-fated promotion. Jessica (Nell Veraque), the daughter of the store owner, finds herself at the center of a string of killings by a mysterious figure wearing a John Carver mask. With the investigation of the local sheriff (Patrick Dempsey) going nowhere, it’s up to her to figure out this gruesome whodunit. With gleeful gore and knowing humor, Roth’s movie serves up the goods for anyone looking for a darker slice of Thanksgiving.
