For Originators at All Levels

I coach originators in the commercial equipment finance and leasing industry on a daily basis. Their experience ranges from being new to the business to originators that have decades of experience. A veteran originator recently asked what my primary suggestions were to new originators. I explained that it was often the same as the suggestions I had given him during our one-on one sessions:

1) Focus on learning through conversations with your vendors and end-users. Your clients will let you know what they need and want. Vendors and end-users know what trends are developing and are always willing to share their knowledge if an originator is willing to listen.

2) There are always new opportunities in the market, and it is the originator's responsibility to always be prospecting and letting the world know that he exists. If an originator wants more business, he must reach out to more potential clients.

3) Focus on transactions and relationships that can be won, approved, and funded. Success is all about efficiency. Successful originators know their place in the market and focus on what works and will deliver the greatest results.

4) Top originators understand all aspects of the process (sales, credit, documentation, funding, and portfolio management). Take every opportunity to gain a holistic understanding of the process. You are selling a process. An originator can best sell what he fully understands.

Survey Finds Top Truck Stop Amenities
Ensuring Safety for Female Truck Drivers

As the trucking industry continues to address the concerns of female truck drivers, Trucker Path has identified how truck stops are responding to the needs of women in trucking.

In collaboration with Women In Motion, Trucker Path spoke to female truck drivers to find out which amenities they look for to ensure safety at a truck stop. The trucking app then looked into how many truck stops offer those amenities.

According to the Trucker Path survey, when it comes to truck stop safety for female truck drivers, it’s all about lighting. The top seven truck stop amenities to ensure safety include:

1. Lighted parking
2. Lighted bathroom access
3. Lighted lounge area
4. Lighted shower facilities with 24/7 access
5. Lighted laundry facilities with 24/7 access
6. 24/7 security present onsite
7. 24/7 maintenance available

Trucker Path identified 320 truck stops within its network that have at least one of those amenities. Of those, nearly all (95.6%) have lighted parking. More than half have lighted bathroom access. Only a few have 24/7 maintenance or lighted laundry facilities.

Trucker Path’s survey highlights some of the challenges female truck drivers face as carriers continue their efforts to hire and retain those drivers.

“While the visibility of women in trucking advertisements has increased and the percentage of women drivers has been rising slowly over the past few decades, significant challenges persist that deter women from considering or continuing a career in trucking,” ATRI states in the study.

2024 Distinguished Service Award

Donna Yanuzzi, Executive Vice President and Head of Equipment Finance at 1st Equipment Finance, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Michael J. Fleming Distinguished Service Award.

Yanuzzi’s two decades of leadership, advocacy and mentorship have advanced both the association and the equipment finance industry. Her remarkable contributions will be celebrated at the Convention’s General Session on Monday, Oct. 28, in Austin, Texas.

ELFA President and CEO Leigh Lytle said. “Donna’s dedication and leadership in so many areas have made a big impact, and we’re excited to recognize her as a driving force committed to moving the equipment finance industry forward.

“On a personal note, when I joined ELFA last year, Donna’s warm welcome and generous sharing of her expertise, as she has done with so many others, was instrumental in helping me quickly feel part of the industry.”

Donna Yanuzzi said, “This recognition I share with many, as it reflects the collaborative spirit of the ELFA/ELFF team and the dedication of our members—each a committed professional devoted to advancing our industry. A dedicated member of ELFA for over 20 years, Yanuzzi has been instrumental in advancing the association’s mission. She has served on several key committees, including the Bank Business Council Steering Committee, and has been an active member of the ELFA Women’s Council, helping to plan the Women’s Leadership Forum and serving as a mentor in the Council's mentoring program.

Yanuzzi is also a strong advocate for the industry’s policy initiatives, regularly participating in Capitol Connections, ELFA’s annual advocacy event in Washington, D.C., that educates and engages members of Congress. She also has served on the LeasePAC Committee.  LeasePAC is the association’s nonpartisan federal political action committee and, as the only political action committee dedicated to the equipment finance industry, plays a critical role in ELFA’s advocacy efforts.

Beyond her work with ELFA, Yanuzzi has made significant contributions to the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation. She has held leadership roles on the Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, Research Committee and National Development Committee. As Chair of the Foundation’s Academic Outreach Committee, she has played a pivotal role in developing the academic scholarship program and raising awareness of equipment finance among students through the Campus to Career program.

Yanuzzi earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from Bloomsburg University. She joined 1st Equipment Finance in 2021, after 25 years serving in various roles up to Managing Director of Sales & Marketing at F.N.B. Equipment Finance. At F.N.B., she collaboratively built and supported a sales team with a portfolio size just under $1 billion and earned national recognition, including F.N.B.’s ranking among the Top 50 finance/leasing companies by the Monitor.
