Growth in Finance and Leasing
Part 1

The purposes of this is to introduce associations and education groups to improve your profession and income. The best advice I can give after viewing the various associations is to attend one of the conferences.

Major Leasing and Finance Conferences (dates and location)
https://leasingnews.org/Pages/conference_dates.html

Number one, the goal should be to join more than one association. Perhaps the first is economical and has many doors you can open, whether it is credit, funding, sales,or operations.  How you can learn from this is to first look at the membership. It tells you perhaps more about them than their website.

Perhaps this association has the most diverse membership with a relatively inexpensive membership Fee. It has excellent conferences, education programs, Webinars, excellent magazine, as well as member groups who get together for social outings. Business is discussed but the groups get together for the fun and friendship.

2023 Year End Membership

  • Broker/Lessor - 213 companies
  • Funding Sources - 83
  • Service Providers - 100
  • Industry Partners - 6
  • TOTAL – 402

-----

While this is considered more of a broker/originator association, the membership shows it has a diverse group.

2023 Membership
Associate – 28
Broker- 371
Funder – 103
Total - 502

Membership is relatively inexpensive, particularly considering the discounts arranged from vendors, as well as free education and Webinars, plus an excellent newsletter,  record conference  exhibitors, a legal counsel available to the board and to members for free consultation.

Most valuable to “members only” for many years is a Private, confidential communication where advice, problems, funders, situations are shared. Divulged conversations may get a member expelled.

NEFA 2024 Spring Conference Summary
By Theresa Kabot, CLFP

NEFA’s spring conference had a very timely theme of Riding The Waves of Change.” There were 384 attendees plua 56 exhibitors.

The Hyatt Huntington Beach Hotel and Spa, California was the perfect backdrop for the events which began on a sunny Monday morning with a golf outing benefiting the Chris Walker Education Fund. That evening, everyone had a blast at the ocean front Karaoke event which raised thousands of dollars for the charity, Laura’s House. Tuesday morning was equally beautiful starting with the Ladies in Leasing Luncheon.

Shari Lipski, CLFP, Principal ECS Financial Services, presented an introduction with the timely story of a woman whose expertise is being called into question by a male counterpart. It is a reminder of how we need to stick together as the perceived inferiority of woman’s contributions in the workplace is still present in some areas of the equipment finance sector. Shari invited everyone’s feedback regarding ways to enhance the Ladies in Leasing and Their Allies luncheon.

Back at the Hyatt, the exhibit hall had opened with 58 exhibitors and the conference was in full swing. There was a lot of buzz regarding the capitalization of both independents and leasing divisions of banks. And there was a feeling of transparency among lenders who were sharing their current challenges with delinquencies but not necessarily charge offs, not yet anyway. There was an overwhelming consensus that the transportation sector has been hit hard and we have not fully experienced the complete cycle of the transportation downturn.

After the committee meetings, attendees took a lighthearted break with comedian Chris Straight and then it was off to go unwind some more, at the opening reception and dinner.

Wednesday morning started with breakfast in the exhibit hall and it was packed with 384 attendees. The opening remarks we made by Chad Sluss, NEFA CFO and Conference Chair, Lisa Whitehead, CLFP, VP/Sales * Service, First Foundation Bank, followed by a virtual presentation by Scott Riehl, VP State Government Relations at ELFA.

Thereafter, Owen Babcock of Padfield and Stout provided an update on the ongoing legal proceedings that have been filed regarding section 1071 and the granted injunction in October 2023 which will delay its implementation for ten months, as of that point in time. Now we wait for the Supreme Court ruling expected sometime before July.

Next, was a conference highlight as Misty May Treanor, three-time Olympic gold medalist International Volleyball and Attorney Robert Hornby,  NEFA President (CSG Law)  engaged in an informal fireside chat with questions about everything from what formed Misty into the person she is today, as well as her mental and physical training, teamwork, communication and of course, her success in winning 112 tournaments and three gold medals in beach volleyball. Her personal stories enthralled everyone and Misty threw a volleyball to every member of the audience who asked a question.  Afterward, we all got a chance to meet Misty in person at the VIP meet and greet.

That afternoon, Best Practices Roundtables addressed Women in Leasing, DEI and Operations and Technology, followed by session on Leadership - Real Talk, Financial Disclosures, From Broker to Discounter, Maximizing Marketing as well as Operational Efficiencies.

There was a lot of talk about climbing delinquencies, troubled assets, rate volatility and how the sharp rate increases over a short period of time have caused challenges for banks, independents, TPOs, vendors and end users alike. And the consensus was, let’s ride it out.
