Full Information: [headlines] Watch at Home Loaded with masterpieces, ranging from lyrical dramas to intricate investigations to hyperkinetic thrills, the latest batch of Criterion releases is a must for true lovers of cinema. The Apu Trilogy: The most respected of all Indian filmmakers, Satyajit Ray reached worldwide acclaim with this wondrous trio of films, which follow a man's life from infancy into adulthood. In the first, "Pather Panchali" (1955), we see Apu as a boy discovering the marvels of the world while he and his family struggle with poverty in a small village. In the second, "Aparajito" (1956), the focus is on the teenaged Apu's relationship with his mother, who's concerned about her son moving to Calcutta for studies. Finally, "The World of Apu" (1959) sees Apu as a young man acquainted with the bliss of love and the sorrows of loss. A humanistic with an astounding eye for telling character interactions, Ray serves a profoundly poignant view of the world. The Blu-Ray restoration of this three-part masterwork is reason for cinephiliac to rejoice. With subtitles. Days of Heaven (1978): Genius filmmaker Terence Malick followed up his brilliant debut (“Badlands”) this exquisite period drama, considered by many to be his finest work. Set in the 1910s, it follows Bill (Richard Gere), a Chicago laborer who, in the wake of a fatal fight, takes off to Texas with his girlfriend Abby (Brooke Adams) and young sister Linda (Linda Manz). Posing as siblings, they work for a rich, lonesome farmer (Sam Shepard), who develops feelings for Abby. She marries the boss in hopes of inheriting his fortune, but things become more complicated when she falls in love with him, which leads the characters down a brutal path. A work at once spare and luxurious, Malick’s film deals in richly expressive and poetic visuals, enhanced by Ennio Morricone’s lyrical score. Lone Star (1996): One of American independent cinema’s most inquisitive figures, writer-director John Sayles exhumes the past to illuminate the present in this complex, observant drama. Set in a frontier Texan town, the story kicks off as a skeleton is found in the desert, leading local Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) on an investigation that looks back at past decades. As he pieces together the interactions between his own father, beloved lawman Buddy Deeds (Matthew McConaughey), and tyrannical Sheriff Charlie Wade (Kris Kristofferson), a tapestry of political and racial tension gradually emerges. Chipping away at established myths to examine human conflict, Sayles here is at his most assured as a storyteller, fluently weaving between characters as well as periods. The cast also includes Elizabeth Pena, Joe Morton, and Frances McDormand. McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971): The most prolific of the great American directors in the New Hollywood of the 1970s, Robert Altman tackled genre after genre with modernist sardonicism. High among his masterpieces is this exquisitely wrought Western, which reinvents the Old West with a simultaneously ruthless and lyrical eye. Warren Beatty delivers a wonderful (and uncharacteristically scruffy) performance as the eponymous McCabe, a wandering, none-too-bright gambler who arrives at a snowy mining community with dreams of making it big. He teams up with crafty madam Mrs. Miller (Julie Christie), but their establishment is soon threatened by a powerful company not afraid to use violence for its own means. A unique mixture of the rough-hewn and the delicate, Altman’s incomparably beautiful classic unfolds like a veritable cinematic ballad. Trainspotting (1996): A wicked blast from the unruly 1990s, English director Danny Boyle’s most famous film has the same kind of eclectic, flashy style that made his Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” a hit with audiences and critics, but it is a much darker, tougher work. Set in a netherworld of colorful, brawling Scottish junkies, it focuses on Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor, in his breakout role), a young man who moves from Edinburgh to London but can’t escape from the dangerous squalor of drugs. He becomes determined to kick the habit, though with people like the brutal Begbie (Robert Carlyle) surrounding him, however, it’s a task easier said than done. Though the subject is grim, Boyle’s breathlessly kinetic style and dark sense of humor keep the harrowing story consistently exhilarating. Fernando Croce is a nationally recognized film reviewer and has been contributing to Leasing News since 2008. His reviews appear each Friday. -------------------------------------------------------------- Mixed Breed Rita Female Ratings by PAW Rita's Story Rita is a young, energetic pup that loves people!
