Funders Forum & Broker Expo, Part 3

Funding a Revenue Based Financing
By Bob Rodi

In a subsequent panel on day two, I was surprised to learn that there is now high interest in this space on behalf of Securitization providers. These are many of the same investors who have been doing ABS, CDO and MBS deals for decades.  The panel of five securitization specialists, including names like Guggenheim and Atalaya Capital (now owned by Blue Owl Capital) who have been in the alternative lending space, explained why Revenue Based Financing is now attracting so much attention from Securitization and Private Equity Providers.

First, the industry has had sufficient time to develop and settle into a widely accepted business model.  Having started approximately 20 years ago, the industry has survived the Great Recession and most recently, the Covid pandemic. This demonstrates that Revenue Based Financing (RBF) is a resilient product that will likely be around well into the future.

Second is the industry growth rate. The RBF segment is posting a double digit CAGR (compound annual growth rate). The RBF market was at $3.4Billion in 2023 as businesses recovered from the pandemic. That had grown to $4.14Billion by 2024 and RBF is expected to grow to nearly $20 Billion by 2032. This equates to a CAGR of 22%

As more companies adopt AI and digitization in Financial Services, online applications are becoming easier and RBF providers are using technology to collect data on portfolio performance, collections, conversion rates and renewals. One of the panelists said that conversion rates on web-based applications are 1% but renewals by those applicants are 50%.

Lastly, the growth of RBF is being driven by regulatory pressure on traditional banks to tighten lending criteria. This has left many small and medium-sized business owners seeking alternative means of funding business expansion. This has created a situation wherein RBF is emerging as a preferred method of raising business capital because of flexible repayment terms and quick and relatively easy funding process when compared to the arduous process of obtaining a bank loan.  Once individual commented that “time is money” and, in the time it often takes to get a bank loan, the capital obtained by an RBF advance is deployed, repaid and subsequently renewed.   The “brain damage” required to get a bank loan is no longer seen as being worth the effort.

The Securitization providers also spoke about what is attractive to them in terms of the type of portfolio they like to see.

1.“Shorter is Better”  Relative  quick payback of 6-12 months is most attractive
2. Businesses with predictable and recurring revenues such as SaaS software providers make it easier for investors to assess risk and set up repayment terms
3. Business with high gross margins minus COGS
4. Business with a proven product market fit that makes it easier to generate recurring sales
5. Early Stage to Mid Stage companies who are past the start-up phase, have some traction but still
has left many small and medium-sized business owners seeking alternative “Shorter is Better”  Relative  quick payback of 6-12 months is most attractive.

To sum the Funders Forum + Brokers Expo: I learned many things, made new friends, and thoroughly enjoyed the Expo.

How to Create a Career Development Plan
By Ken Lubin, ZRG Partners

Set Specific Career Goals
First, take time to think about where you want to go in your career. Set SMART goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, you may want to become a marketing manager within the next five years or double your current salary within the next three years. Your goals should excite you and give you direction.

Identify Skills to Develop
Next, analyze what skills and knowledge you’ll need to attain your goals. Make a list of both hard and soft skills. Hard skills are specific abilities like using Salesforce or speaking a different language. Soft skills are intangibles like communication, creativity, and leadership. Assess your current strengths and weaknesses to recognize what skills need development.

Create a Timeline

Plot out milestones over a timeline to work toward your goals. For instance, you may want to take an advanced social media marketing course this year, shadow a marketing manager next year, and aim for a manager role in two years. Breaking goals into smaller steps makes them more manageable.

Outline Development Activities

Detail specific activities that will help build the skills in your plan. Include training programs, online courses, books to read, mentorships, volunteer work, and anything else that gets you closer to your goals. Calendars can help you schedule activities.

Revisit and Revise

Treat your career development plan as a living document that needs ongoing attention. Review it regularly and make changes as needed. Your goals and timeframes may shift. New opportunities for growth may arise. Revise your plan often to keep it current.
Following these steps can help you design a clear roadmap for growing your career. With hard work and commitment to your development activities, you’ll be on the path to success and satisfaction.

Effects of Tariffs on U.S. Economy Pile Up
By Katharina Buchholz, Statista

Tariff actions currently in effect and announced by the Trump administration could lower U.S. GDP by up to 0.65 percent, a report by The Tax Foundation has found. This includes new tariffs on China, currently (partly) paused tariffs on Canada and Mexico and tariffs on global imports of steel and aluminum that went into effect today. Also, part of the calculation are tariffs on EU goods of 25 percent, announced February 26, and those of the same percentage share on motor vehicles and their parts, scheduled for April 2. All these tariff actions combined could also lower U.S. full-time employment by almost 600,000.

For comparison, The Tax Foundation estimates that 2018-2019 trade war tariffs, mostly with China, lowered U.S. GDP by just 0.25 percent and cost around 170,000 full-time jobs (including retaliatory action). The report estimates that tariffs would also lower U.S. after-tax incomes by 1.7-2.2 percent as well as increase costs for consumers. The Chinese trade war tariffs raised in 2018-2019 and those that stayed in place in the following years under the two countries' agreement already equaled an additional tax on the average American household by $300-$600 in 2023 depending on the calculation, the report says.

On the other side of the equation stands an increase of government income of between $229-263 billion from tariffs in 2025 (and slightly more each year after that if they stayed in place). However, compared to all of government revenue, this number would still be in the single digit percent share of the budget.
