from the Past -June 14,2000—Bulletin Board Idea “I agree with the
comments about the sale of leasing companies, as opposed to those ‘in
trouble.’ “I do think that
you should include brokers having problems, as the impact of the nature
of such problems could potentially lead our industry to government regulation,
\ instead of self-regulation. “One additional comment:
is that my experience has been that as the market tightens & margins
decrease that fraud tends to increase. Those out there who have enjoyed
high margins and expected them to continue forever will be stretched
in the future to make ends meet. "Desperate people do desperate
things," even the most honest of people when backed deep enough
into a corner will be prone to do what it takes to get a deal done. “On the other side,
we must be very careful about reporting, derogatory behavior due to
potential liability we could bring upon ourselves. I have been an advocate
for years that the industry needs a place where fraudulent, deals, lessee,
vendors & brokers could be posted. Of course this would need to
be monitored & verified, because competitors could post negative
comments just to cast a negative image on companies they don't like.
“ R Rob Yohe MLOST@aol.com second e-mail from
Rob: “Feel free to quote
me as long as you don't think it would misconstrued that I'm out to
get anyone, unless they are dragging the leasing industry through the
mud, such as not returning security deposits, selling fraud deals or
getting reported to the BBB. As so feel free to edit my comments as
you deem necessary. “I honestly believe
fraud will be on the increase over the next few months, based upon past
cycles the industry has gone through. Plus with credit scoring combined
all the companies willing to "fix" your personal credit, fraud
will be easier to accomplish. “While I do not claim
to be an "expert" on fraud, I think you know my assessments
are not without validity. “ RY Land
Line’s René Tankersley dies in accident (To Leasing News
readers, her stories were the first, and most thorough, regarding Commercial
Money Market, and The Funding Tree, keeping advance rentals, not fundling
truck leasing transactions. Leasing News often worked with her on the
stories, but she had the tenacity to talk to all the “victims,” explore
all the avenues of the story, and was on top of what was happening,
trying to warn trucks and others about what was happening.
She also found others We printed all her
stories, too. (As the Associated
Editor sums it up at the end of this story, ”The truckers out
on the road always knew that if they needed a friend or help, they could
call Rene and she would be there for them. She is one of a kind, and
irreplaceable.” ) --by the
Land Line staff René Tankersley,
42, feature editor at Land Line and a tireless advocate for American
truckers, died Wednesday, June 9, after her car was involved in a traffic
accident. Tankersley was the
winner of several national awards for her work at Land Line, including
the magazine’s first national gold medal in the International Automotive
Media Awards, where her work bested the likes of Motor Trend Magazine
and Car and Driver. Her winning story
about trucker John Kendrix helped expose a sloppy investigation of a
heavily publicized wreck involving the OOIDA member, who was falsely
accused of using drugs and alcohol by investigators. She won a second
gold medal from the Association of Automotive Publication Editors for
her March 2003 story on trucker Daryl McCartor and his wife, Margo Freshwater.
That piece won best single news article in the national contest. But perhaps most
important was her dogged work on behalf of truck drivers. Tankersley
was known for her investigative pieces on consumer issues, going to
bat for truckers who had been the victims of scams or unscrupulous businesses.
She would often spend hours on the phone tracking down details or on
the Internet researching an issue. In some cases, her stories led to
official investigations. Tankersley kept as
busy in her off time as she did at work. She had been a member of the
board of directors of the Truck Writers of North America. With her husband,
Ed, she was also active in the Oak Grove Seventh-day Adventist Church,
where he was an elder and she held numerous positions, including serving
on the church board. A mother of two and grandmother, she single-handedly
ran a prison ministry, counseling more than 100 inmates in various facilities
and helping them with Bible studies through the mail. A native Californian,
Tankersley spent most of her life in Arkansas. She formerly worked for
The Trucker, a trucking newspaper based in Little Rock, and had also
worked for the Belle Vista, AR, Weekly Vista, and The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
She held a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Arkansas. The accident occurred
about 9 a.m. as Tankersley was on her way from her home in Buckner,
MO, to work in Grain Valley. The accident site was about five miles
south of her home. A state trooper on the scene said he could not release
details of the accident pending an investigation. Obituary Born Betty René Stivers on Sept. 2, 1961, in Santa Ana, Calif., she was the daughter
of LaVerne and Jody Stivers of Prescott, Ark. She married Ed Tankersley
April 13, 1984. Known to friends and family by her middle name, René, she spent most of her life in Arkansas. She is survived by
her husband, Ed, of the home; her parents, of Prescott; a son, Christopher
Lee Tankersley, of Gulfport, Miss.; a daughter, Melissa Shelley, and
son-in-law, John Shelley, of Farmington, Ark.; two grandchildren, Alexis
and Austin Shelley, of Farmington; a brother, Richard Stivers, and sister-in-law,
Becky Stivers, and their four children, of Murfreesboro, Ark.; another
brother, Eldon Stivers, and a nephew, of Nash, Texas; and a sister,
Darla Stivers, of Camden, Ark. Services will be
held at Royer Funeral Home in Grain Valley. Visitation is 2 p.m. Sunday,
June 13; memorial services will follow at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral
home. The family suggests flowers or memorials to
her grandchildren’s education fund, in care of the family. For
information, call Royer Chapel at (816) 847-4441

of West Equipment Leasing New Program Jerry Newell, CLP,
Executive Vice President of Bank of the West Equipment Leasing
announced the formation of a new equipment leasing business, National
Middle Market Leasing. He has been with
the bank for seventeen years, including 9 ½ years in charge of the
leasing division, growing it from $30 million in assets to $800 million
in assets today, booking $409 million in business last year which is
expected to exceed over $500 million this year. "The Bank has
been expanding and is about to close two Bank of the West
was one of the last to get into the “application only” business, with
guidelines and different rate structure than with full financial
statements and tax returns. " It also last
year began offering a medical " application only" product
that is expanding, plus “municipal” leasing, especially since Bank of
the West has started a unit taking government deposits. “We like leasing,
it’s that simple,” Newell explains. “This middle market is relatively
new to us, and at the same time, we want to continue to expand
our present market place. “This unit will directly
market mid-ticket leases ($1 million to $10 million) to middle market
companies through a network of direct lease officers located in major
metropolitan areas nationwide, “he said. “ Peter Lofquist,
formerly President of Mellon U.S. Leasing and most recently President
of Banknorth Leasing Group, will join Bank of the West to direct this
new business initiative. “Doug Hatch, VP has
been promoted to Manager of Indirect Leasing. Doug has been with Bank
of the West for 21 years and has been the Credit Manager of Indirect
Leasing for the last nine years. In his new capacity, Doug has overall
responsibility for our national broker funding business, “ Newell said,
adding, “This promotion is well deserved and I am sure you will all
join me in congratulating Doug.” Reporting to Peter
Lofquist also, Mike Przekop, VP and Manager will be expanding Bank of
the West Equipment Secondary Markets business. “This unit now purchases
small ticket lease portfolios and will begin purchasing syndicated middle
market lease transactions nationwide also.” he explained. “Adolph Chang, SVP
has joined us as Equipment Leasing Credit Manager with credit responsibility
for all Bank of the West equipment leasing units. Adolph comes to us
from our sister company, First Hawaiian Bank, where he held positions
of increasing responsibility during his 25 year career. “ “These developments
underline Bank of the West's commitment to the Equipment Leasing industry.
Building on 30 successful years as a broker funding source, “ Newell
concluded. “ Bank of the West has developed a full service leasing business
that also includes Direct Leasing for Bank of the West customers and
through our wholly owned subsidiary, Trinity Capital, Vendor Leasing
and Lease Management Services.” “We appreciate our
relationship with our Broker and Discounter partners in equipment leasing
and we thank them for their continued business.” Leasing News could

Day in American History National
Flag Day According to the encyclopedia of American
Facts and Dates, the somewhat obscure and uncertain history of the American
Fag began during 1775-1777. In
October, 1775, when Congress created the first naval force, it also
set down rules for creation of a flag. The result, variously called
Congress Colors, the Grand Union Flag, or the First Navy Ensign, was
a flag of 13 alternating red and white stripes, with a field of blue
bearing the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew. This flag is believed
to be the one raised by Lt. John Paul Jones aboard Commodore Esek Hopkin’s
flagship Alfred on the Delaware River at Philadelphia on December 3,
1775. The first land raising
of the Grand Union Flag occurred at Prospect Hill in Sommerville, Mass.
on December 3, 1776, during the American siege of Boston. By the way,
“ the first flag commissioned for the navy was simply the basic British
Union flag divided by white stripes. Our second flag, the Stars and
Strips, substituted stars for the cross in the corner square. The red,
white, and blue colors were derivative. They did not, as some allege,
come out of Washington’s family crest. And they do not mean anything.
Contrary to the ‘Boy Scout Handbook,’ the blue in the flag does not
represent justice, the white is not for purity, and the red is not for
braver.” ( Shenkman, “ Legends, Lies & Cherished Myths of American
History(1988) Another
myth is that she sewed the flag personally, which is basically not correct.
She was a contractor who hired seamstresses to sew sails and
flags for ships and had the lowest bid to Congress for the flag ( and
her firm also made the flag that Francis Scott Key wrote about---it
was quite large and the commander of the fort had some controversy over
the cost and the size of the flag---but that is another story ). http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/jun14.html June 14-16—Minnesota Inventors Congress To
promote creativity and development of ideas into marketable products,
to educate inventors and to bring the inventor to experts in the appropriate
field---highlights include more than 170 inventions from around the
world on display, 100 student inventors, the Minnesota Inventors Hall
of Fame and the Marketplace with inventions for sale. 1775-
the Continental Congress established the army as the first US Military
service. 1777-
John Adams introduced the following resolution before the Continental
Congress, meeting at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: “ Resolved, That the
flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate
red and white, that the union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field,
representing a new constellation.” (by the way, this is a legal holiday
in Pennsylvania). The blue field
was to bear 13 stars, one for each state. The tradition that Betsy Ross designed the flag has been almost
completely discredited. The
flag was originally suggested by Francis Hopkinson, a member of the
Continental Navy Board from 1776 to 1778, who is considered by historians
to be the father of the Stars and Stripes. 1811-
birthday of American writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, daughter of the Reverend
Lyman Beecher and sister of Henry Ward Beecher. Author of Uncle Tom’s
Cabin, an antislavery novel that provoked a storm of protest and resulted
in fame for its author. Two characters in the novel attained such importance
that their names became part of the English language—the Negro slave,
Uncle Tom, and the villainous slave owner, Simon Legree. The reaction
to Uncle Tom’s Cabin and its profound political impact are without parallel
in American literature. It is said that during the Civil War, when Harriet
Beecher Stowe was introduced to President Abraham Lincoln, his words
to her were, “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that made
this great war.’ Stowe was born at Litchfield, CT and died at Hartford,
CT, July 1,1896. http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/stowe/StoweHB.html http://www.bragi.com/classics/s/hbs1811/utomc01.shtml 1820- birthday of John Bartlett, American editor and compiler ( Bartlett’s “Famous Quotations”(1855) was born at Plymouth, MA. Though he had little formal education, he created one of the most-used reference works of the English language. No quotation of his own is among the more than 22,000 listed today, but in the preface to the first edition, he wrote that the object of his work “ originally made without any view of publication” was to show “ the obligation our language owes to various authors for numerous phrases and familiar quotations which have become household words.” Bartlett died at Cambridge, MA, Dec. 3, 1905. 1834-my don Dash in

The cap was connected to an air pump on the boat by means of
a rubber hose. The feet were weighted with heavy lead shot.

vital communications center south of Richmond. The next three days,

Leasing Sports Report: Baja
500 with Izzy Sanchez and Crew Mark Handley / Solar
Racing take 1st place in legendary BAJA 500! (This took place the weekend of June 4-6,2004) Thursday the Solar
Racing BAJA 500 team headed south for the seaside town of Ensenada,
Mexico. The team was set to take on the famed (or infamous)
Baja Peninsula for the 36th annual BAJA 500. Mark Handley and Marc Stein (former owner of
the race truck) would share in the driving duties, Ignacio "Nacho
/ Iggy" Sanchez and Kevin Galloway would split the co-piloting
duties. The race truck was painstakingly prepped by
Mike McComas of ACE Motorsports. Our
goal was to have a problem free race and to win! Friday was contingency
and technical inspection. Friday
night was the driver's meeting. It
was held in the outdoor amphitheater on the grounds of the Convention
Center. Always a spectacle. For example, at last years BAJA 1000, Mario
Andretti was the master of ceremonies. As usual, the Mexican Navy was there to do the presentation of the
flag and their national anthem. There
was a brief award for Sal Fish from the Colonel at DARPA for his help
with the Robot race in March. Afterwards, the racers
were briefed as to any last minute race details and to be reminded of
certain rules, ie. don't run over slower traffic and no speeding on
the highway (instant DQ if caught. the race goes on and off the pavement,
where most of it is NOT a closed course).
The racers were limited to 60mph on the freeway, down for some
vehicles who can do in excess of 140mph.
One actually got DQ'd for 125! Our race truck was
set to depart towards the back of the some 300 plus entries from around
the world. The first four-wheel
vehicle left at 9:00am, leaving our truck to start at approximately
10:45. The race is based on elapsed time, so the racers
start at 30 second intervals. Marc
and Kevin started the race and set a blistering pace from the beginning.
We knew we had to contend with the 4wheel drive Hummer of the
last couple year's class champion and Baja 500 winner as well as a new
Dodge 4wheel drive. In addition, a last minute entry into the class was a 1969 F-100
and previous Baja Winner. Despite a couple
flat tires, Marc maneuvered the truck thru the coastal mountains out
to the coast for some 90+ miles south, and then off into the mountains
that would lead to the demise of many a race vehicle.
This was a 50+ mile loop thru rocky river beds, freshly cut mountain
trails, rocky silty uphill climbs, and spectacular scenery.
The best part is coming out of a section like that back to the
civilization that is the "pits".
Marc and Kevin jumped out at race mile 223 and handed it over
to Mark and Iggy at about 5pm. With the truck so
well prepared for the race, there were no issues at the driver change
to deal with, only getting us strapped in and the "pig being fed"
some liquid fuel, gas, lots of gas!
As we take off out of the pits, our focus is on the mountains
ahead. Our next scheduled pit
stop was to be at race mile 317. Nascar and Indy have their pits every 1-2miles,
ours are 50-100miles. Within minutes of
being in the truck, we encounter our first problem.
There are two race cars blocking the course in a very technical
section. Due to the fact we
are climbing up through the mountains, there is no way to get around
them. There were approximately 5 cars/trucks between
us and the blockage and probably 15 racers behind us. Unless you were confident your race car could
make it over 4-6 foot boulders, you weren't getting around. Finally, about 8 co-riders walked up the hill
to help lift the cars apart and try to get them thru the rest of the
section. It was deep silt strewn
with boulders along the side of the mountain while making a 90 degree
turn as you climb the mountain. Finally
after about a half hour of waiting, seemed like longer since we were
feeling our lead evaporate. We
at least knew our competitors were behind us. Thinking of how the
lighter buggies got stuck, we knew it would be a trick for our 6000lb
2wheel drive stock F-150. With
a little recon of the boulder configuration and turn requirements, Nacho
got us on the right route. Mix
with a few extra ponies at the right moment and we were on our way.
Next destination Mike's Sky Ranch and Valle Trinidad. It was the Mike's Sky Ranch loop that handed
us our DNF at last years 500. Time
for us to exact our revenge on the course that beat us last year. It was now getting dark as we approach the
locale of last years demise. With
much relief, we pass last years "spot" and continue to go
down the hillside into Mike's Sky Ranch, where we are greeted by all
the race fans partying at this mountain rancho.
The campfires and music were a welcome sight after coming across
some 90 miles of mountain terrain.
It was now a sprint
down the graded road and into the river wash then on to our pits at
Valle T for our final gas stop and to put up the roof lights, bringing
the total number of high-power lights to 9, not including the HID factory
headlights. It can be very easy to outdrive your headlights
(not a good thing) while going so fast along some of the roads. The mountain and desert skies just absorb so
much light. Now we were set and
we only had another 115 miles to go!
The truck ran flawlessly all the way from the "Goat Trail"
up thru the mountain areas of Independencia, where we encountered the
flash floods at the BajaMex last year.
We were going back and forth with a couple of other cars from
other classes, while taking in the nighttime scenery with the rising
moon in the background. Then it was of to
Tres Hermanos, and out to the farming community of Ojos Negros. A quick stop to check everything before the
last 20 miles back into Ensenada. We
go thru the ranchos of Ojos, jump on the highway for about 9kilometers
but get behind a line up of cars. With
a DQ not being an option, we did not want to pass the truck going about
2mph down the hill which was causing the line up.
Fortunately, we had a race course to jump back on to and did
not have to wait all the way into town.
We were feeling home free, only a few miles to go.
Only thing is, of all the prerunning I've done in Mexico, I had
never been thru this section. This
is where the Mexico experience kicks in.
This would involve my lack of experience in that area, and, the
experience of having the locals remove all of the course markings to
try to get us lost on the way in. Are
you still lost if you know exactly where you are but not where you are
going? Between a few missed turns and a few back-ups, we were able to navigate
our way around the booby-traps the locals had out (another Mexican experience)
and eventually made it to the pavement in Ensenada. There is something liberating about running stop sign after stop
sign while the police just sit and watch!
As always with Baja,
it's not over until it's over. We
had to go back off the pavement into the riverbed that led racers out
of town at the start. After
maneuvering around some exuberant fans, both 2 and 4 legged, and a broken
race truck less than a mile from the finish, we were led up the side
of the river bed into a back alley which led to the FINISH LINE at the
downtown Baseball Stadium. Just finishing is always gratifying, but finishing
first is what we came to do! Our
well prepped race truck was First On Race Day! We got in just after 1:30am, with a total elapsed
time of 14hrs and 44 minutes. Only
58% of the entries made it to the finish line. Special Alert: Based on our calculations, I am now leading
in points for SCORE Stock-Full Class!
Two more races in the SCORE series:
Primm 300 & BAJA 1000! Special thanks to
the team: Marc Stein for delivering a flawless truck

up). Kevin and Iggy for keeping us drivers on the
